I live in a rural area, so I cast a wider net than I'd like when it comes to eHarmony. I have my matching set at 300 miles. Most of my matches come from Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky, though I will get some from Ohio, Tennessee and Iowa.

I learned today that somehow, California is within 300 miles of where I live. Who knew? Maybe I missed some sort of catastrophic earthquake that obliterated several states. The match wasn't even listed as a flexible match.

Thanks eHarmony, now I know I can plan my next trip to California since I'll be able to drive there in less than a day. While you're at moving states around, can you please relocate Hawaii to the mainland (or at least accessible by bridge) and make it close to me too? I've always wanted to visit, but right now it's an awfully long trip.

My experience with the 30 mile setting is that it gives me matches out to about 55 road miles.

The 60 miles setting gives me a bit over 100 road miles, when a reasonable route is available.

60 miles also gives me some who are across the Delaware bay - so they are well over 100 road miles.

I was frustrated with this ever since I first used online dating.

Where are you putting your "importance" setting?

LOL MicMan –

I’m making an educated guess that your Match Flexibility is set to Very Important, and that 300 miles wouldn’t stretch that far – am I right?

I’m also going to go out on a limb here and suggest why this might have happened: maybe your match wrote California as the location showing to matches, but entered a zip code that fell within your mile radius. Or, it’s possible that your match changed their location on their profile after being matched with you.

If not, then we’re neighbors! We’re always here if you need to borrow a cup of sugar.

Kate,

Before I was convinced that you had your servers on the island from Lost since I was able to travel into the future to close a match, but now that you can also manipulate geography, I know you have something funky going on there.

Since I got closed: other regularly, it only points to me being one of The Others.

My guess is that somehow my match initially entered incorrect information and changed her location to Eureka, CA. I guess she had a eureka moment.

At this point, I honestly don't remember what my distance importance is set to, but I can tell you that Cali isn't in the ballpark of 300 miles of where I live. I'd say that 99% of my matches are within my distance, though it isn't unusual to get most of my matches close to the edge of that.

Eureka -- that's hilarious!! Maybe this was meant to be, MicMan, maybe you've struck gold, here, in spite of it being outside your original preference.

And my name fits... Not that I'm agreeing that we have servers on the island from Lost. Our servers are in a secure, stable location. LOL!

Ah, so you're not sure if your Match Flexibility is set to Very Important. Well, there's an outside chance that that could be the reason for this match, too.

Assuming a uniform population density (not that the population is uniformly dense - though that may also be the case), it is a function of simple geometry that there will be more matches toward the outer edge of your search radius than toward the center.

Unfortunately, we'll never solve this mystery since she closed the match. Even though she was well outside my distance (unless y'all shifted California on me!), I thought I'd see what would happen.

See...the similarities are too many. Is eHarmony a part of the DHARMA Initiative?

But just to be clear, had she been well outside of my geographical distance, she would have been listed as a Flexible Match, right? She didn't show up as a Flexible Match.
