I already had one picture posted, but I wanted to add a few more. I uploaded them from my computer (or so I thought) and added some captions. I can see the pictures and the captions when I go to 'My photos', but when I go to 'View my profile', I can't see any of the new ones that I added. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Do photos need to be approved before my matches can see them?

Yes, photos do have to go through the approval process before they will be seen on your profile by your matches.
