I posted a general thread on this topic in the dating section, but I figured I would start one here specific to eharmony.

Online, women often list "poor grammar" as a "can't stand" (men may list it as well, but I never see men's lists).

I imagine that when people refer to grammar, they are talking about more than the offical definition of grammar.

Ladies, when you say poor grammar, what exactly do you mean? Are we talking sentence structure and subject/predicate agreement? Are we talking about improper pronunciation, like regional accents or saying "dat" instead of "that?" Are we talking about using slang?

I guess I don't know yet how to navigate this site. For me, I absolutely require strong language skills which I intend to mean good spelling, good syntax. At this website, I've seen very few violations, but I'm new. :-)

I use this one, and I am speaking of all of the above, actually. Overuse of slang, poor diction and pronunciation in spoken conversation; excessive abbreviations (i.e. 'textspeak') , poor spelling and word choice, and punctuation and grammatical errors in written communication are drastic red flags for me.

Does that make me a 'snob' ? Maybe. Am I too old to lose sleep over being considered a 'grammar snob'/ Absolutely!

Oh - I am not talking about the occasional typo, we all type too fast or carelessly (or in the dark) at times.

In another thread I offered napkins for extra-buttery popcorn. Perhaps they are needed here instead?

Hi Lois49, welcome to eHarmony Advice! Glad that so far you've gotten what sounds like some decent matches. I hope you join us for more discussions!

Nunayabizness -

Based on the members that I’ve spoken with through Customer Care, it seems that there are a wide variety of definitions. I think the biggest underlying theme I’ve noticed is that what they’re really getting at is that (what they deem as) poor language skills is an indicator of a lower level of intelligence or education than what they are particularly looking for.

Just a little personal note here – I know many people who are very intelligent who have dyslexia. Some of these individuals even have higher degrees of education. Remember that eHarmony doesn’t have a spell check at the moment, so if you see letters turned around in words and phrases, you might want to cut that person some slack and be willing to go forward to a stage where you can talk in person to see what they are really like.
