Hi John and welcome to EHA! I think your profile is generally a good start but needs some tweaking. My favorite part is your book review! You kind of come alive there! and I actually want to go read that book! Some comments below ... I deleted the sections I think are fine as is. Good luck with EH!

Johnc5 wrote :

I'm really just looking for someone who can be my best friend (as corny and cliche as that sounds). Someone that I can always have fun and joke around with, as well as someone who will tell me what I need to hear. I hope to find that here. Talk to you soon. Again, this sounds like you're seeking a friend, male or female.

The last book John read and enjoyed:

I lent it to a friend, but I think the title was Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. It is a fictional tale of Jesus from the time he is a child to when he is crucified...and it is hilarious! Basically, Jesus acts just like you would expect. He doesn't sin, though he is curious about sin. So he has his friend Biff experiment for him during their travels. It is really well written and imaginative. Seriously, if you aren't worried about blasphemy or anything, read it. This is my favorite section of your profile! What I like is: I have never heard of this book, so it's unique and interesting; your writing style here is very clear and is conversational, like you're talking to me, which is engaging.

Thanks Sassafras. I changed my most passionate statement just before you posted to sound less generic, but that is a good point about not being romantic enough. To be honest that isn't one of my strong points. An elliptical is an exercise machine, basically a variation on the treadmill, but maybe I should take that out.

The one thing John is most passionate about: I'm pretty passionate about life in general. generic line. I have read 2000 profiles, Everyone says this. I like surrounding myself with friends and family - very common response.and people I care about, as well as take time to enjoy life and relax. seen this 1000 times. Writing would be the thing I am most passionate about. I'm hoping to get my first novel published soon.
John, it sounds good but it won't help you stand out. Everyone writes something like this. It says almost nothing about who you are.
Pick 2 things that make you want to get out of bed in the morning and expand on them. Make the reader beliieve that you really enjoy/care about these things. Don't just list things here.
if you love to write then start with that. It is unique. Also, write using a narrative style. It is easier to read and sounds as if you are speaking to the reader.
"I took and interest in writing when I was ............I love to write about......I am hoping to publish a novel about.....".

The most important thing John is looking for in a person is: I'm looking for a genuine person. Someone who is a straight shooter, who will always speak their mind. I respect people who mean what they say, even if we don't agree. Someone who understands my dry sense of humor is a must (some people just don't get it.)
Sounds good. Although I have read "genuine" quite often but I agree that it is a rare quality that can be overlooked.

In my own words

The most influential person in John's life has been:

I think my college friend Drew and my freshman roommate Kevin had the most influence on me. Drew opened my mind to a lot of things (mostly technology and quantum physics stuff, ha ha) and Kevin helped me come out of my shell early in my college career. Oh, and my friend Josh, who shows me what not to do.
You could expand on this a bit unless you think it's too personal. Can you tell a short story here?

The three things which John is most thankful for:

  • My parents who have always supported my (sometimes odd) life choices. take off "odd" unless you are going to tell us what it means. It may scare people. What does odd mean??
  • Being able to talk comfortably with pretty much anyone
  • Napa isn't all that exciting, but I am really glad I was born here Why? "Being born in Napa because........."
Three of John's best life-skills are:

  • Continuing to expand my knowledge and awareness
  • Using humor to make friends laugh
  • Finding pleasure and contentment in simple things

The one thing John wishes MORE people would notice about him is:

I guess that I am a happy and positive person. My regular expression, I am told, is sort of serious. I don't have one of those naturally smiling faces, except for when I am talking to people.
Be careful how you answer this question. People may think that you are in denial. You can say the same thing but maybe rephrase it. "When you first meet me you may see me as a serious person, but once you get to know me a bit you will notice that I am......."

The way you phrased it makes it sound like we may never see it.

The things John can't live without are:

  • Food (For the love, not the physical need)
  • Laptop
  • iPod
  • Eliptical
  • Computer/PS3
You can expand on these to make them more personal.
-what type of food?? "Food, especially Italian..."? It will reeal more about you.

The first thing people notice about John is:

I'm not really sure. If it is someone I am having a conversation with, hopefully they notice how easy going/funny I am. I love making people laugh and I am comfortable around pretty much everyone, even if I don't know them.

Some additional information John wanted you to know is:

I'm really just looking for someone who can be my best friend (as corny and cliche as that sounds). Someone that I can always have fun and joke around with, as well as someone who will tell me what I need to hear. - are you looking for an honest person or someone who is going to be there to make you feel good whethere they are being honest or not? Rephrase this. I hope to find that here. Talk to you soon.

My interests

John typically spends his leisure time:

I like to play video games (RPGs and action games, if you like them too). Right now I am playing Red Dead Redemption, which is a western themed game. It is brutal in the best way, ha ha. I also like to write, as I mentioned. Reading is one of my favorite things to do too. I love the Harry Potter books, and the Robert Jordan series Wheel of Time is incredibly detailed and 'epic' (I'm afraid that this word has gone the way of 'awesome' and lost it's meaning). Although I don't consider it leisure time, I also help my parents take care of their property (only an acre) and I try to exercise regularly.
Sounds good. You said you like to spend time with friends as well. What do you like to do with them? If you and I were matched together I would be wondering if there was anything we could do together. Most of these sound like solitary activities.

According to my friends:

John's friends describe him as:

  • Perceptive
  • Funny
  • Genuine
  • Intelligent
Good luck to you John. This is only my oppinion so take it with a grain of salt.

Ah yes! there was a thread here about the eliptical awhile ago. Maybe just put "elliptical (exercise machine)" for those who don't know.

Oh that is a great "passion" statement now! Excellent.

Being romantic: OK. This doesn't need to be flowery love language, and in fact my personal preference in mens' profiles is to avoid that. Perhaps my use of "romantic" was misleading.

I meant more: when you imagine being in a great relationship, in love with some woman, what is it about her that you imagine? Avoid cliches like soulmate, honesty, etc. -- things that pretty much everyone wants.

I think this section is difficult to write. It requires you to verbalize something that can be hard to define. You want to write something that, when a woman who would be a great match for you is reading it, she will go "that's me ... that guy will connect with me"

John, one more thing. Make sure you are smiling in your pictures!! It makes a huge difference. You don't look happy in your avatar picture. It helps if you get a friend to take the picture for you. It will make your smile look genuine.

p.s. I know what an eliptical machine is. Keep it because it tells the reader that you are interested in keeping fit. Maybe just expand on the sentence. Something like, "My elliptical trainer to keep in shape"

Also, I just noticed the updated passionate section. Very nice!!

Thank you Tenderheart and Sassafras. Your notes have been immensly helpful. The picture thing is tough because I just lost like, 25 lbs and don't want to use any of my old "good pictures". But I am working on it.

Ok, I tried tweaking it based on those notes. How does this one read?

The one thing John is most passionate about: I'm most passionate about writing. I just started two years ago, but I have finished my first novel and am hoping to get it published soon and I am a good way into my second. My first three novels will be one cohesive story with the first based in San Jose, CA and the second taking place on another world. The third will be the climax and resolution for the series. While I haven't gotten representation yet I am confident that I will be able to become a career novelist. I'm the classic B type personality, but the one area that I strive for perfection is my writing.

The most important thing John is looking for in a person is: I'm looking for a genuine person. Someone who is a straight shooter, who will always speak their mind. I respect people who mean what they say, even if we don't agree. Someone that I can share my feelings and affection with of course. I'm a pretty open person but I don't easily share my true feelings. Physical and Emotional intimacy is a must.

Ethnicity: White, non-Hispanic Religion: Spiritual, but not religious Drinks: A few times a year Smokes: Never

In my own words

The most influential person in John's life has been:

I think my college friend Drew and my freshman roommate Kevin had the most influence on me. Drew opened my mind to a lot of things. We had many late nights talking about philosophy and quantum physics as well as politics and upcoming technology. And Kevin helped me come out of my shell early in my college career by introducing me to the people that would become my freshman year circle of friends. Oh, and my friend Josh. He is the apathetic inconsiderate rogue you love to hate, but he makes some terrible decisions. So at the very least he shows me what not to do.

The three things which John is most thankful for:

  • My parents who have always supported my life choices even if they don't understand them.
  • Being able to talk comfortably with pretty much anyone.
  • Napa isn't all that exciting, but I am really glad I was born here.

Three of John's best life-skills are:

  • Continuing to expand my knowledge and awareness
  • Using humor to make friends laugh
  • Finding pleasure and contentment in simple things

The one thing John wishes MORE people would notice about him is:

People have told me that I have a serious face, but I am actually a pretty happy and easy going person. That is readily apparent as you get to know me, but I guess I wish that more people saw it right away.

The things John can't live without are:

  • Pizza, it's my favorite.
  • The Internet, an absolutely essential tool in today's society.
  • iPod, I take it everywhere.
  • Eliptical, low impact exercise for the win.
  • Computer/PS3

The first thing people notice about John is:

I'm not really sure. If it is someone I am having a conversation with, hopefully they notice how easy going/funny I am. I love making people laugh and I am comfortable around pretty much everyone, even if I don't know them.

Some additional information John wanted you to know is:

I know everyone talks about their sense of humor and how funny they are, but I really do enjoy making people laugh. I have been acting since I was nine (I studied it in college too) and my favorite thing to do was get up on stage and act in a comedy. I played a 60 year old Frenchman named Gaston in Picasso at the Lapin Agile, essentially a character who is comedic relief in a comedy. It's in everyone's profile, but comedy and laughter are a big part of my life, so there you go.

My interests

John typically spends his leisure time:

I like to play video games (RPGs and action games, if you like them too). Right now I am playing Red Dead Redemption, which is a western themed game. Although I don't consider it leisure time, I also help my parents take care of their property and I try to exercise regularly. Usually hanging out with friends, just talking or going to the movies or playing video games, of course. And a couple other nerdy things that I won't admit to just yet.

You might still think about editing the "cannot live without" list : internet, computer, gaming, ipod... technology is great but not at the expense of other pursuits and qualities (that's what many ask when reading it). Just something to think about. I was asked often to clarify similar stuff from my matches.
