Before today, I had never been a member on these forums. I've been using eHarmony for a year and a half or so, now, and I've done the best I could. I initiate communication with anyone who isn't too far away from me or has some incredibly incompatible interest, I maintain my profile and have lots of recent pictures with good captions, and I never close matches unless they are too far from me or have not communicated in over 90 days. I have over 500 matches, very few at OC, and, despite my best efforts, I'm still single.

I decided to jump on these forums because of the changes made this week. Paying customers like me have been cheated out of essential site functionality despite the premium we pay for membership. (I'm a first-year law student living on loans, so even a $60 payment is a lot out of my budget)

Let's look at what we used to receive with our subscriptions that we no longer get.

  • Sending Reasons for Closing
I used to be able to send reasons for closing. Now, I cannot.

Instead of telling a match that I am only closing her because she lives too far away or has not communicated with me for too long, now I feel like a jerk for closing someone without cause. Matches don't know why I'm closing, so I'm more hesitant do it now. This is only going to leave more open, stagnant matches, which is even more frustrating.

  • Receiving Reasons for Closing
I used to receive reasons when a match closed me. Now, I do not.

I like knowing why someone is closing me. I like at least having to open the profile again to know who it was that closed me. With the new changes, the match disappears. And when you click the orange button on the list page, it just goes away. No explanations. Just poof.

  • Sending Final Messages
I used to be able to send a final message after a match closed me. Now, I cannot.

Any time a match closed me with whom I did legitimately see potential, or if she listed a reason that I did not think was accurate, I sent a final message asking her to reconsider. This has led -- twice -- to being reopened, and I'm still in touch with one of those. Those are two chances I would not have gotten with the new system. Aside from losing this layer of functionality, it is also very unfulfilling to not even have the option to do my "due diligence" of trying everything I can, including the final message. It feels like I have been robbed of an extra step I used to be able to take.

  • Receiving Final Messages
Matches used to be able to send me final messages if they moved or had plans to move closer to me or if they became active on eHarmony. Now, they cannot.

Like I said earlier, I closed matches if they live too far away from me or have not communicated with me for a very long time, appearing inactive. Previously, a match could request that I re-open our match because one of these situations changed. Because I am unable to list reasons for closing, I can't even count on a closed match to call Customer Care to re-open if one of these situation changes because she won't know why I closed.
---

I have listed very clear functionalities that the eHarmony service used to offer and now does not. I paid for these services and now no longer receive them. The recent overhaul is not an improvement, it is pure denial and removal of previously-provided features.

I either want to have this functionality or my subscription cost returned.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Personally I liked being able to send a reason for closing and liked to know why a match was closing me. However, the vast majority of people seem to have been against this. I also liked to be able to send a final message if I so chose. I don't know that the other people had any opinion on this or not.

The reason for closing has been a topic of discussion on the Advice boards for a very long time. Also since the site changes there has been quite a discussion for and against the changes. You should have joined us a year and half ago when you signed up to the eHarmony dating site.

I too liked the availability of reasons and the option to request reopening.

This isn't as bad as a change as one might think. People keep popping up and complaining about it, but usually in life when something is going good you're not going to hear a bunch of people extolling the virtues of a new change. Who you are going to hear are the people that don't like the change. People are more apt to make public their disapproval rather than their approval.

For the most part, people are reactive. I think it's a good guess that Eh is reacting to all the complaints about what a pain it was to close matches. Me, I love it. One click and done. I think there were many more complaints about the old way compared to the new way. I think it's here to stay, at least for a while. Personally, I'm glad.

Personally I think that it's a good change and long past due. Closed is closed and the real reason for closing someone is always the same - they are just not interested in you and there is nothing that you can do about that. It's much healthier to accept that not everyone out there will find you attractive or datable than to sweat and obsess over why not.

One click and you are done???

Apparently you haven't tried to Close a new Match out yet.
I believe it has been counted that to Close a new Match requires up to 8? 10? clicks now, versus about 4 before.

Now, I am not actually opposed to EH making us work a little harder to Close someone out. It encourages us to spend a few more moments thinking about the Match before making that move.

However, arguing that they made it simpler to Close someone?
That simply isn't true.

Agreed to a certain extent.

But we all know that sometimes we make a too hasty move in Closing someone out.

Perhaps you have been flooded with Matches, and you start Closing some 8's, because you got all these 10's...
A few weeks go by and all those 10's have poofed on you, and you start having 2nd thoughts about those 8's you Closed, maybe you should have given a couple of those guys a shot.

This is why I feel having a Reopen Request option is still valid.

Sure, it doesn't get used successfully that often, but why take something away that might actually work for some people?

As I said in my original post, the vast majority of my closings were for matches who lived too far away from me or had not responded to communication in 3+ months. There are definitely other reasons for closing than what you're talking about, and I feel like I have lost a layer of communication in not being able to tell matches why I'm closing. The pre-archive system allowed me to voice the fact that I was closing because of distance or inactivity and allowed the match to send a final message if one of those had changed.

The debate over whether doing away with closed comments is emotionally healthy or better for the process is another thread. Here, I'm saying that I have lost a layer of communication that the service used to provide, a layer that I really valued, yet we're still paying the same price. This is about paying for a service and then having it significantly devalued post-payment.

I still don't see what the big deal is. I don't care if something sits in the communication stage for a year. Let it sit there. Is the world's internet going to crash because it's still there after 3+ months? To me, archiving a match is the same as closing. Once it has been archived and I don't see it anymore, it's pretty much closed to me. Why the need to go through the extra steps to close it out completely? What do you gain from that? It's not like the world is going to come to an end because you archived and didn't close or because someone hasn't replied to communication in months. Big deal.
