[COLOR=black]I received a copy of "instyle" magazine the other day and after investigation, discovered it was sent to me per eharmony. I've been told there is no charge but cancelled anyway as I am not a fashion magazine person..(now if they’d sent a copy of Archaeology Mag I might have liked it! )

The good news is that eHarmony did not sell your info (and, the magazine was not given your financial billing info). This was an offer that was made when you subscribed to the service (I'm not sure if it's opt in or opt out, but apparently you did not choose "not" to receive the mags).

I also don't like this sort of practice (i.e., where you have to be vigilant to guard against receiving other offers), but it does seem to be an accepted marketing strategy these days.

If you do wish to stop receiving the free magazine, you can simply cancel the subscription.

(BTW - if you cut-and-paste your post from a word processing program like Word, lots of extra "smilies" show up in it when viewed in Firefox, and angle brackets when viewed in Explorer. You can avoid this by composing in Notepad or Wordpad, or by first pasting your post into one of those programs before cutting-and-pasting it into the message box here. )

This is so far from identity theft that it's not funny.

Have you ever heard of junk mail?

Of course it's not ID theft but selling personal info is never aceptable (to me) and as I indicated--I am more wary that most.

I was stating the information for those who were unaware of this practice and would want to know. That's all.

It has been over 2 years since I subscribed to eHarmony. But when I signed up at the end of the registration process there was an opportunity to receive a magazine of your choice. There was a default choice which you could change or you could decline receiving any magazine and $10 would be sent as a rebate.

Personally I chose to not receive any magazine yet I never received my rebate either. To me this is much more of a problem than to have a magazine that I really don't want showing up at my house.

eHarmony did not provide any more information than your mailing address to the publisher. And the way to avoid these sorts of problems is to read.
