I'm particularly interested in hearing from the "spiritual, not religious" types out there, but as always, everyone's input is valuable. If someone references religion in his/her profile, beyond just the listing under "Basic Information," does that make it more likely you will close him/her?

No, i will not close. I have to see how much of a zealot someone is before giving them the boot. Usually, I will wait to meet up, but many times, Open communication will work if we find out its incompatible.

Many people believe they are catholic, or jewish, or whatever faith. However, there's nuances of people's faith and acceptance of others. If they do not accept me, of course, we're going to have problems, but its a decision they make, not I. I will give them the benefit of the doubt. If they prove to me that I am definitely not what they're looking for, then we close.

I only close them out if they reference it more than once. Most people seem to list a religion they were brought up with even when they're not religious anymore. Sinners are much more fun.

That's so funny - just this morning I received a match that had a refernce to religion in every category - person who influenced him most was Jesus, things he couldn't live without were Jesus, God the Father, Bible, Church and forgiveness, etc. I did close this match, because what he was looking for was 'a life-partner to walk hand in hand with himself anf Our Savior'. I knew that this was not me, although I admire his honesty and conviction.

Since you can specify which religion(s) you want to be matched with, it would make sense to do so.

I am on the other side of your question as I am an active member of a church but I have my settings to accept matches that are "spiritual, not religious". I will usually wait to inquire about where they stand on religion and my being an active member of my church. I find that in most cases my matches are far less tolerant than I am whether they are "spiritual, not religious" or even just a different denomination than I am.

Scared off? No. Turned off? Yes.

I don't mind seeing a religion listed in a profile, but if "God" or such appears in the profile, it gets an instant close from me.

I am what eH calls "neither spiritual nor religious," and I don't mind one bit when I am closed for this kind of difference in worldview.

I am scared off by any religious types who …
Believe in an invisible, magical being that lives in the sky and will grant any wish the supplicant makes. (or not if a lesson is the be learned or they are not reverent enough)

Actually live out a way of life of hate and violence for others that don’t belong to their particular belief system or are different from them. (tribe)

Want to have whatever country they live in revert to a theocracy based on their particular belief system – and have their particular “holy book” be the source of all laws and punishments in the land.

Believe whatever their religious leaders say because they choose to be wilfully ignorant of what is actually contained in their particular holy book – or their leader’s motivations.

Choose to eschew science and insist that everything we need to know is contained in their particular holy book.

Actually believe in demons and angels.

Live out their entire life based on what they believe will happene to them after they are dead.

Want to have an active hand in bringing about the destruction of our planet (Armageddon) because they believe it will help bring their invisible sky being back.
Ummm … how’s that for a start?

Depends on what it is that is written.
I personally dont think that a lot needs to be said about ones beliefs in their profile. They should have been matched with someone they want to be matched with. So if there is a lot written in their profile I will close them.
Its a balance thing with me.
