I went to account setting to close my account and it walks me through the steps,...but when its over and the account is closed all my current matches are still there and it looks active to me!

I do NOT want my profile sent out and I see no need for current matches to think I am still active. Short of posting that I closed my account (which I did in all available boxes on my profile) how do I get my profile to go away?

You can go to edit profile and basically delete most of your information/written text. If you want, you could probably also write in "inactive profile as of " and then put a date. I think your account will always be there as a placemarker of sorts but you do have the option of removing most of the information from it.

I finally called customer service, she walked me through it and when I told her what it was doing....she ended up closing the account. Still no idea why it didn't do it for me. The only thought is that it's because I still have some time left on my subscription.

On another note--she told me that if people didn't log into their profile for 3 weeks, they were marked "inactive' and not matched with ayone. Not sure if I believe that but I guess it no longer applies to me, eh?

And I did go through and put "No longer a member 4/2010" in the profile boxes.

If there's a chance you might come back just close all the open matches and turn off matching. If the matching is not turned off, your profile stays in the queue and you will be one of those 'dead' matches that doesn't respond to communication.

Interesting because that sure doesn't seem to be the case.

I tried that. It didnt work. I deleated, checked the save changes. When I was done, looked at the profile and the old stuff was still there.
I actually had to put something else in there for it to change it.

Hi Angryromancegrrl,

I’m not sure what you were doing to try and close your account, so I can’t really address that process – usually you should just be able to go to the My Settings page, Account Settings page, scroll down, and you’ll see the “Close account” button. Getting in touch with Customer Care was the best thing to do in your case.

Actually, it sounds like the representative you spoke with was giving you a big window by saying that it takes 3 weeks for your profile to become unavailable/inactive – at least, I know that that’s the case when an account is closed (as opposed to letting it just expire).

Within a shorter amount of time (usually 24 hours, in most cases) profiles become completely unavailable to any match you’ve had in the past, and your matches should eventually be moved to the Closed tab. When your account is closed, the matching feature is also automatically shut off so you couldn’t be sent to anyone as a match.

Maybe I should also add that if you re-open your account online, you'll see that your subscription has expired, but if you re-open right away, your matches will be able to see your profile and they won't move to your Closed tab.

All the best,

Thank you Kate!

These are exactly the kind of informative posts that a lot of us here welcome!
A lot of us are really unsure how the Account closing procedure works, and what are the various things that happen during this process.

I know for myself, I have often wondered what someone has to do to get the message to pop up on my screen about "This Match is no longer available".
Now I know!

Kate--you misunderstand. She advised me that if someone didn't login for three weeks, they automatically were taken out of the database nd not matched with anyone.

While that's a lovely concept I am not sure I believe that considering I have a friend who hasn't logged in in months and she still gets matches sent to her.

But I should be out of the database!

Sorry for the misunderstanding, Angryromancegrrl –

I’m used to “closing an account” meaning something different than allowing it to expire by turning off the automatic renewal feature. Sorry for the confusion, now I see what you mean.
