I am relatively new to the boards, so my apologies if this has been covered before!

I was matched with someone today who listed their personal instant message screen name in their profile. I was not interested in the match, but I got to thinking about the tactic and was curious to see how many other profiles have this listed. I am a paying member, and to me that just screams "red flag" as far as them being a non-paid member (a huge point of irritation for me).

However, I got to thinking that some people are (obviously) non-paying members, and if they're not paying, I could be missing out on some great matches! And I don't want to judge as to why they're not paid members. On the other hand, it shows me how serious they are about dating (not very) if they don't want to join and commit to it 100%.

Anyway, I was curious as to some other opinions on this. Like I said, I was not interested in this particular match, but if it's a popular thing to inclue (and, of course, not in any violations) I might reconsider the tactic. Thanks

IM screen names are usually a sign of a s cammer. Providing it in a profile is against eH's Terms Of Service. I would report this match and let EH handle it.

.
Referring to the emphasized portion of this post, if taken literally no one would ever actually meet anyone on eHarmony. After all, most of us talk on the phone to set up that first date! I think the vast majority (based on my personal experience) of matches also exchange e-mail addresses to take the communication off-site. Apparently sending a match your phone number is against the TOS!

I can understand not posting a phone number or email addresss in the profile, but if eHarmony were to enforce this clause literally no one would ever use this service.

I would think that eharmony is enforcing this clause to protect it's paying members..

WW.. I know you're a fcw'er and I have nothing against people who use the service as intended on those weekends. Which I believe you do, but those who blatantly try to work around the system should have their hand slapped!

By "enforcing literally" I meant not allowing members to exchange phone numbers or email addresses during communication.... I didn't mean they should allow this info in a profile. My apologies if I wasn't clear.

On a FCW I wait until I get to OC, or at least to the 3rd Step/2nd questions answers to provide my contact info.

(I paid eH for a full 12 months without meeting even one match... I've more than paid for this "service.")

OP, I only got one EH match who put personal contact info in his profile. It's not a usual thing to do. It could indicate some kind of s-c-a-m since the person is trying to get you to engage outside the system. Could be they just don't want to fork $ over.

If you put contact info in your profile, you will be breaking the TOS, for which you can get banned, but you also will be telling all your matches that you might be a s-c-a-m. Not a good idea! Just do the normal communication path.

I always kind of take it as a red flag... although it depends. But usually if a match gives me their email address in the profile or the open question portion of the comm, I sort of become uninterested. I think it sort of takes away from the whole experience. Plus, to me it shows an unwillingness to wait. I also think it's kind of a dumb idea because you don't know who's out there... especially on eharmony. It could be anyone! And once someone has your email address then they kind find your facebook, twitter, etc. That's kind of scary... at least to me. The internet is a stalker's paradise.

Easy fix.. create another email address for dating sites only.

My main email is for friends and family only. The second email address is for anything I do on the internet that requires an email address.
