The way it is now is as it has always been for me (or, at least for the past couple of years). I've never sent first questions, so I can't speak to that, but if I or my match simply views the profile of the other, the status changes to the next step (i.e., now from "introduction"to "getting to "get to know each other").

Perhaps the way the site functions is simply not the same for all of us (e.g. depending on when we first joined)?
That's always been the case in the new tab, but the change with the new layout was that in the "communicating" tab, if you sent questions and the other person hadn't viewed your profile it would say "Introduction" and if they had viewed your profile it would say "stage 1". So for a while you could tell after you'd sent first questions if the other person had viewed your profile regardless or whether you'd viewed it...an extremely helpful feature. If you never initiated communication, you would never have noticed this.

Yup Yup.
I noticed this too last night...

Kate/Renee, can you please please please please PRETTY PLEASE get this changed back???

It was VERY helpful for us who initiate contact first!!!

Yes NearDC, you don't see the distinction, as the change was made ONLY on the "Initiators" side.

Since you never initiate contact, you would not have noticed this.

For us initiators, where the Match moves from the "New" to "Open" tab, up until last night, it used to show either:

"Introduction" - This means they have NOT looked at our Profile.

"Get to Know Each Other" - This means they HAVE looked at our Profile.

The fact that this has been removed for initiators while leaving it for non-initiators is totally and completely broken!!!

This is because it now encourages people to now NOT initiate communication right away, so instead they can first determine if the person has looked at our Profile or not yet.

EHarmony shouldn't be removing features for us initiators, but instead ADDING features and ENCOURAGING us to initiate contact!!!

I once again plead...

Kate/Renee, can you please please please please PRETTY PLEASE get this changed back???

I never noticed this feature, so I'm not sure how useful it would be.

When I send someone questions, I wait for her to answer them, which is all that matters. I don't care if she's viewed my profile, but doesn't that get indicated on another tab?

If she read my questions but didn't answer them, I don't see how knowing that helps me much, since I can't do anything with that match (other than close it) until she answers them.

Much more useful would be knowing who is nonpaying and roughly how long it had been since they were on the site.

If you can tell she never looked, you can pretty much assume she's nonpaying and then you'd send a nudge during an FCW.

If she looks but doesn't answer, I suppose many will presume it's lack of interest and close.

That was my take on how they are using it anyway. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I can say personally when I saw looking without answers I'd give them until an FCW (then close it after the FCW) and someone just never looking leads me to think it's probably a match from the eH crypt and the person is just long gone and I'll close it after a few weeks.

I mainly use it as a gauge for what proportion of my matches are actually active. It may not change how I use the site per se, but it is interesting to know as something to factor in when making renewal decisions.

So, the stage designation was different under the "communicating" tab than it was under the "new" tab for the same match for those with whom you had initiated communication? The match would show up as "getting to know each other" under the "new" tab, but "Introduction" under the commuicating tab until they viewed the first questions?

Scott - I don't have an "Open" tab; I assume that you are referring to the "communicating" tab?

Sorry to be so obtuse; I'm just trying to get a clear picture of what others have been seeing...

Other sites do seem to have a feature that shows how recently the person was last online. If even free sites can offer this, seems like that would be easy enough to implement and would also help (to some degree) to figure out who is really a member and who is not.

Of course, I agree with Mr. Flyer that it would be really useful to know which matches weren't really paying members, even though I do not initiate communication.
