So I'm an active member for the next little while. For the first time in over 2 years, I can see the pictures of the hundreds of matches I was given while I was inactive. (Well, the ones that posted pictures, anyway.)

I had forgotten how bad a lot of my match pictures are. Not "bad" unattractive, but "bad" useless. A tiny little woman standing in front of the Taj Mahal. A big family reunion picture where you can't see anyone's face, much less figure out which one is you. Bar pictures that you probably... ummm... don't really remember? Etc.

Take some time to post good pictures. Large enough to show up on the screen, and zoomed in enough to focus on you, not the background or other people.

Yep, mine are all up to date and only of me. Close-ups, face only, whole body, in nice dresses, in riding gear, in hunting gear. The only thing is that nobody has bothered to look at them.

Make sure you don't have any of the "postage stamp" pics that are so tiny you can't make out any detail.

If you're going to post pics with other people, clearly identify yourself. "With friends" is wholly unhelpful as is "I'm in green" when two of the four people in the picture are wearing green.

It really isn't hard to find someone with a digital camera if you don't have one yourself. Find a friend and take a variety of pictures, then carefully select the best ones of the bunch to post.

I've had at least one match who obviously scanned his image from his photo ID work badge!

I had one match who had two photos, the caption for each was her with her cousin. I never did figure out which one she was.

I've had a few that scanned theirs off their Driver's Licenses. That's wonderful.

Well I didn't actually pay. I got some free time for all the trouble with them closing my account.

Through 2 days, I can see that about 25% of the new matches are active. Even during this FCW. I am surprised that they still have inactives to send me, I thought I had exhausted their supply.

It takes a bit of time to look through 700 old matches. Gives me a few more things to add to the list of picture no-no's.

- pictures with a guy who has been cropped out.
- pictures with a guy who has not been cropped out. And not identified either. Could be a brother, co-worker, rabbi. Pool boy? Ummm... husband?
- pictures with a guy where you Photoshopped a square or a blob shape over only his face. Maybe he's in witness protection.
- pictures at a bar or party or cruise or whatever where your eyes are closed and you're screaming or grimacing. Or both.

Then there are the Halloween pictures. And I don't mean pictures with a sheet over your head... although that would be much preferred in some cases. I mean, I try to be understanding and kind, but some pictures are so scary that I actually yelped out loud!

And for Pete's sake, show your pictures to a friend before you post them. A friend who can tell you things like "hon, you know you have big ol' horse teeth, I've told you a hundred times. That shot with the big toothy grin has got to go." Everyone has a bad feature. Please don't emphasize it.

Now I understand who all those awful eH Advice articles are written for. There's just a stunning lack of common sense in the world.

While I agree with most of your tips, Melman (see our Photo Guidelines: What are your photo posting guidelines?) –

I do think it’s quite possible that someone’s photo doesn’t do them justice.

We’ve all heard many stories about people who posted out-dated photos or airbrushed photos, but on the side of hearing the couples who’ve found someone…a lot of them say how pleasantly surprised they were when they actually met the person. It goes both ways!
