FYI - I received an e-mail from eHarmony tonight saying that they've extended the FCW through Tuesday (I'm guessing probably because of the access problems some of us had this weekend).

E-mail says:

Now through Tuesday night you can communicate with all of your matches for free!

For the last 5 days (Wed. - Sun.) millions of members have had the opportunity to communicate with their eHarmony matches for free! The event has been such a success that we've decided to extend it for another two days; through Tuesday night.

I hope that my 3 matches that just made it the point of OC got this message also.

Of course being the veteran eHarmony user that I am I did include my e-mail address in my answers to her Second Questions

A weeklong free communication event -- I'm sure the people who run free dating sites are amused at eHarmony now.

I doubt the extension is to make up for access problems. A financial, business reason is much more likely.

Since they run free weekends so frequently, giving free weekends is already part of their overall business plan. On free weekends of course they make a killing on the banner ads. If they're so happy to extend this, I wonder if they make more money during free weekends than regular weekends.

I wonder what would happen if EH switched to this model permanently. What do you guys think?

Oh joy! Just what we needed! More half-filled out profiles without pictures and people not even serious about what it takes to begin developing a friendship or relationship! What fun! So no reason to log in until Thursday and I can just close them all!

Thanks e-Harmony for making finding a partner that much more difficult for paying customers.

I wouldn't like it at all.
You turn EHarmony into a POF, and you turn it into junk.

The $, even if it is just a measly 20 bucks a month, I believe keeps out the worst of the riff raff, and brings in people that truly are interested in a LTR/marriage.
I like that.

I know you have harsh opinions against EHarmony, some valid, some not. But one thing you can't argue is that the quality of PAID Matches you generally DO get on EHarmony, are a whole lot better than the Matches on the freebie dating web sites.

Us guys won't like it because then it will become 75-80% guys to 20% gals, just like the existing free sites.

The gals won't like it because all the player guys will hop on EH, just as they have done on the freebie sites, and will be just looking for a Piece of A, FWB, one night stands, etc, again, just like the existing free sites.

I would argue that instead of making EH a free site, they should:

1) Mark people as paid/non-paid members.
2) Allow us paid members to have some sort of "token" to allow a specific non-paid member to communicate with us.
Maybe give us paid members 20 "tokens" a month that we could use, to escalate a non-paid member to a paid member JUST for communication with us.

Great idea, Scott. Paying customers should have a way to deliniate non-paying customers, because 95% of them are garbage, not serious at all about finding a LTR and are here for the free ride.

Is e-Harmony looking for a way to make getting serious matches MORE difficult for paying customers? If so, I think they nailed it.

I'm here on the FCW. Don't know about other people taking advantage of it, but I'm using it as a test-drive. I tried eHa years ago, and it was terrible. Every match it found me was completely wrong -- meaning that it was someone thousands of miles outside of my search zone, twenty to thirty years older, Certain Religion only looking for other Certain Religion members (which I wasn't), etc. As interested as I am in looking for a long term relationship, money is tight, and I can't throw it away on a site that just plain didn't work.

I agree, though, that the FCW seem to turn into chaos. Maybe it would work better if they offered free, or low-priced week or 10-day trials for potential new members? They'd have to track it through something other than email, so everybody could only have maybe one every year or two, or whatever. That way there wouldn't be a crazed rush of people on the site deluging current members, and serious potential new members wouldn't keep getting matched with freebie-seekers, getting the wrong impression of the site, and not joining.

Its been chaotic when Free Weekend is on here because ALL of the matches that are using the free weekend can't see photos. Its frustrating when I have 100 photo nudge requests. I tend to turn off matching now during these events and wait out until the event is over.
I wish there was a way to also see who's active on here. I got a match that recently told me was on here YEARS AGO and hadn't updated her pics. What? wow.

They were all communicating with me and I closed them out for having thin, meaningless profiles and no photos 180 closed and counting.
