This is another useless profile question. Over half of my matches cited "The Secret" as their book. Wish for what you want and it will come true. Ugh. The remainder were obscure novels which gave me absolutely no insight into anything.

"Currently reading Myths and Legends of Ireland. Recently read The Purpose Driven Life, How to Get a Date Worth Keeping, Act Like a Lady - Think Like a Man (I am really trying to figure this dating thing out) I used to be an avid reader, particularly mystery novels, but now don't have as much time for reading other than a daily Bible verse, and job related technical stuff."

I guess it will come as no surprise that I actually LOVE this question. Ok, a LOT of the answers are the same, but it is a real turn on when a guy has read something interesting and describes it in a way that makes me want to go borrow the book. I have actually! Hasn't always made me want to go get the guy, haha. Conversely, it has caused me to close guys who say they don't read or that they absolutely loved the latest Bill O'Reilly book! So at the risk of scaring off men who equate my interest in travel & travel books with a desire for a surgar daddy to pay for these trips, I posted the following book in my profile:

" "The Geography of Bliss: one grump's search for the happiest places in the world" by Eric Weiner. It combines some of my favorite things: travel, reading, and humor. Not only has it made me think about the value of boredom and paying attention to whatever I'm doing as a formula for being happier with my life, it has also made me seriously consider visiting Bhutan- of all places. (Me! a big fan of clean toilets and well paved roads.) What other book can accomplish that while intermingling humor calculated to make even the most determined grump smile."

Well that's an interesting answer, although a bit lengthy...

Maybe that's the secret to a useful answer to this question - to pick a book on a topic that has broad appeal. Travel and humor are pretty good topics. But a lot of topics and authors (you mentioned O'Reilly) will annoy the reader. So you have to be a bit careful.

A well written sentence or two about why you enjoyed the book is also very useful. Keeping in mind that the purpose of the profile is to generate interest from the reader.

But I'm not kidding, just about all my matches listed a self-help book or some girly novel.

Does mentioning a daily Bible verse help or hurt? Ladies- what do you think about men who read dating advice books? Personally it makes me go a little "eeewww". And the comment "I am trying to figure out dating" has to go. It creates doubt.

And to be fair, the answers I gave to this question at various times are as follows. I don't remember ever getting any follow up questions or discussion about them.

1. "Catholicism for Dummies" does a really good job of explaining things that I learned when I was little but never really understood at an adult level.
2. "The Coming Generational Storm" appealed to the financial planning geek in me.
3. Most of my books are related to my hobbies or interests - baseball, running, hiking, cooking, etc.

As a general rule it does not hurt in my search as my matches that would be turned off by this statement (and a couple have mentioned this) would not be compatible with me anyway. It would seem that your mention of "Catholicism for Dummies" would have the same effect.

One of the dating books listed was recommended to me by a match and with I discuss these various books with my dating mentors (females) and we share what concepts and ideas we each took away from the books. And whether the ideas put forth by the authors are sound and make sense.

It would help greatly if eHarmony had smileys that you could put in your about me. The use of smileys allows for the indication of humor. And actually I wish my matches would read some of these books. I think most of them could use a little help.

Sigh.... ALL of my answers are a bit lengthy. Haven't you noticed by now Melman? Maybe I should add somewhere to my profile that I am interested in dating my opposite, ie. someone who is succinct and to the point.

They aren't bad. They are all different than what I typically read in my matches, but maybe they could stand to be a little longer. You haven't sent me scrambling to check if the books are at my library. But I haven't closed you based on your reading choices, so maybe that is after all the more important goal.

The last book I read was True Colours by Adam Gilchrist. As I'm a huge cricket fan, I found it a fascinating read. It's always interesting to learn about the life of the sportsman - not just batting and keeping statistics and how the media decide to portray him.

Back in the day a ton of matches chose that book, and I had the same reaction. Ugh.
