Not sure if this is what this board is for, but I could use some help with my profile. About 99% of my matches close or don't respond. I'm not an unattractive guy, though I'm not Brad Pitt. I'm at least average I hope. I'm educated and well rounded. Have a good career and many interests. So how do I get a woman to get past my profile and want to meet in person, which usually I'm pretty good at? I am new to online dating as I have moved to an area where I can't find women through work or friends. However, waking up to 10 matches and 9 closed matches is not really making this a positive experience. If the 1 out of 10 that didn't close meant that I was actually talking and meeting people it wouldn't be bad. However, that 1 out of 10 doesn't close because I have a feeling they don't really have a membership and aren't active. I've been on this for 2 months and have only communicated with 4 people. Any advice as to what I should change or add to my profile would be appreciated.

Ryan - You need to cut-and-paste your profile into your post so people can take a look at it...

I'm not always sure what this board is for either, but welcome.

I question your numbers. If 9 out of 10 are closing, that says 9 out of 10 are active members (maybe paid, maybe not). That's not been my experience. I estimated that only about 3 of 10 were active. Others here estimate as low as 1 out of 10.

4 communications in 2 months is perhaps a bit low but not unreasonable. Depends on how big your search distance is and how many matches you're getting.

Make sure your profile is complete, properly written (complete sentences and correct spelling), and accurately describes you (not the person you wish you were, or the person you think your matches are looking for). Post your profile for review if you wish. (In the "Using eH" section, which is where the mods will probably move this thread. And check out the many profiles already reviewed there.)

1. What are you most passionate about? I have always loved to read, and am very passionate about books and education. I have a good collection of books. I also enjoy movies, sports, politics, and the arts. I love to be outside and love to golf and be out on the course. 2. What are the THREE things for which you are MOST thankful? 1.
2.
3. 3. Other than your parents, who has been the most influential person in your life and why? My high school English teacher gave me direction and a passion. Always knew what to say to get me to push harder. He was a great teacher that became a great friend and mentor. He turned out to be a pretty good author himself. 4. The four things your friends say about you are: Edit Intelligent
Perceptive
Passionate
Funny
5. What are three of your BEST life-skills? Edit Using humor to make friends laugh
Continuing to expand my knowledge and awareness
Communicating my innermost thoughts and feelings
6. What is the most important quality that you are looking for in another person? Independence, a good personality and able to have fun and enjoy life. Looking for someone who can be as good a friend as she is a partner. 7. Other than your appearance, what is the first thing that people notice about you? my smile? I'm not really sure what they notice first. 8. What is the ONE thing that people DON'T notice about you right away that you WISH they WOULD? I would say my personality I'm the type of person who improves upon greater acquaintance. I am not as gregarious at first at times but I like to communicate and can have a good time with a wide variety of people. 9. How do you typically spend your leisure time? books movies, golfing, watching sports, walking my dog, traveling, and enjoying the outdoors; visiting farmer's markets and festivals. 10. What are five things that you "can't live without?" a. b. c. d. e. 11. Describe the last book that you read and enjoyed. What was it about? What did you like most about it? Possession...which I've read multiple times. It is a favorite of mine..a literary detective story with parallel love stories featuring, poetry, short stories, faerie tales. It's about twp graduate scholars who discovers a love affair between a fictional Victorian poet and an feminist Victorian author. They investigate the affair following the letters and clues within the poems and short stories written by the two writers. It is an amazing novel and the scope and versatility of the writing is impressive. 12. Describe one thing about yourself that only your best friends know. I tend to be the Charles Dickens of verbal story telling and not in the timeless classic author sense. More of the unnecessary verbal tangents, fit every detail in, take 15 minutes to tell a 5 minute tale sense. 13. Is there any additional information you would like your matches to know about you?
Your Introductory Information is the "first impression" that you make on your matches. Take a moment to review your answers. Did you represent yourself well? Spelling and grammar are important, but above all, the page should reflect your unique perspective and give someone insight into who you are.

You're right. I probably exaggerated the numbers between what were inactive and don't hear back from and those who have closed. But I would say that most of my matches do get closed more than those that just don't answer back because they are not members. Which leads me to believe that they have looked at my profile and are not interested.

Try copying it question by question.. not highlighting the entire profile at once
