Has anyone ever caught a match telling an obvious lie on their profile?

I had two matches lie about where they lived. One of my minor interests is maps, and I have several of the world, nation, state, and city in which I live. I live in Colorado, and I am familier with all the major cities, and know where most of the small towns are, but not all of them.

One match, calling herself "Rhonda", said she lived in Rhonda, CO. Another said she lived in Las Vegas, CO. If I'm not sure where a town is, I'll look it up, because Colorado is a large state, and someone could live up to a 5 hr drive away.

I shortly discovered the towns of Rhonda, and Las Vegas, CO do not exist, there is a Las Vegas, New Mexico, (been there) but it is a 4 hour drive away.

I find a lie of any kind, a very poor way to start a relationship.....Close!

Anybody else seen blatent and obvious lies in profiles?

are you talking about EH or other sites..

It is a common thing on all the internet dating sites. Either they are fake profiles, or a member who is not comfortable providing their information.

How do you know its a lie, and just not a mistype?

When people first sign up, they have to get that information.

EHarmony is massive information overload when you sign up, and have to fill out so much stuff...

They could have mistyped their city and/or state, and then couldn't figure out how to correct it.

I have had a couple Matches that in their "More about me" info, they have said things like "I am really X+1, I don't know why EH has me at X".

It seems like the Rhonda who lives in Rhonda, CO probably is just someone who couldn't figure out how to switch it to what it really should be.
Or maybe she just signed up, and has not caught that she typed it wrong yet.

The only time I would Close someone based on their text in the Profile when it comes to "lies", would be the obvious scammers from overseas, who can't write a correct line of English to save their life.

Otherwise, I give them the benefit of the doubt, and just keep an eye on it during later communication.

If it's just the city/state disconnect, then I would give him/her the benefit of the doubt. It's most likely a mistype and he/she has not figured out how to fix it. You could bring it up during FastTrack or OC.

I have found some inconsistencies but nothing that I considered an out right lie.

I use a nearby zip code because I live in such a small town that I could be found simply by going to the store and asking who is the 50 something widow in town. Is that a lie, some would say it is, I say it is a simple security measure.

Dear jtkdp,

Since you posted your topic on the Using eHarmony thread, I am assuming that you are referring to eHarmony matches.

During the registration process, members agree to abide by our Terms and Conditions of Service. One term is that they agree not to provide "misleading" information.

As everyone knows, there is a lot of information that members are required to provide when registering to our site, and it is certainly possible, as ScottK said, that these two matches made an "error" when providing their location information.

However, also per our Terms and Conditions of Service, members agree to report any match whom they believe has violated any of these terms. Therefore, if you are closing a match because you believe that they purposely provided misleading information, we ask that you e-mail your concerns to: matchconcerns@eharmony.com.

An account specialist can then research the matter and determine, what, if any action is required.

All the best,

-Renee

Yes, I am refering to eHarmony matches. It seems that a lot of people are taking the side of the profile writers, but bear in mind several things.

First, I have had matches from very small towns, who were accurate about where they lived. However, if someone doesn't want to reveal where they are exactly, I would accept the next nearest larger town...just don't make something up.

Second, if they make typos, and are not concerned about editing it for accuracy, what else might they not be concerned about?

Third, and I'll say it again, Colorado is a big state. Almost 104k square miles. The state of Rhode Island would comfortably fit into a valley where I frequently go camping. I live about in the middle of the state, but a trip to the borders or corner regions could take as long as 4 or 6 hours by car. I'm looking for a trip of two hours or less. I don't want to start up another realtionship with a person that lives further away than that, been there, done that, didn't work. If I don't know where they live, I can't make a good decision whether I want to open with them, based on their distance.

Now has anyone else seen anything dishonest in a profile...thats what this thread was really supposed to be about.

Just a couple of additional points...

Since we have no way of viewing our own profile, it can be very difficult to detect errors like these. I just looked under my account, and I don't even see an option for indicating what state I'm from. It's possible, then, that the person from "Las Vegas" actually is in Las Vegas but made an easy-to-make error in entering her zipcode (e.g., hit "80xxx" instead of "89xxx"). If I were you, I would report it so Customer Care can alert her to it and have her correct it.

I believe that distance is determined by zipcode/address (not by town and state), so if you have your distance parameters set (and distance is "very important" to you), then most of your matches should be an acceptable distance from you...

With respect to your question, I'm not aware of any dishonest profiles among my matches, but then again I've interacted with so few of them that it would be hard for me to tell...lol.

jtkdp, you are really missing the point here. mistakes do happen. and they may be because the poster was sloppy or EH screwed up. that happened recently with my own profile.

i moved to the seattle area from new york and thought i had every thing set. when i enrolled in relyID- EHARMONY WROTE OVER MY LOCATION AND STATED I WAS FROM NEW YORK. i had people closing me out almost literally in my own backyard for distance when we were really less than five miles away! it took me about two weeks to detect the error.

so this is not off topic. give people the benefit of the doubt- unless there is some glaring reason to not. everyone needs to be allowed to make mistakes. everyone here knows i have made enough of them. i am even willing to bet most here have also made plenty of mistakes in the past.
