"Match Settings"

Eharmony: "How much do you drink?"

Me: "Never"

Eharmony: "To receive more matches we recommend changing this setting to 'About once a week' or higher."

A good meal deserves a good wine. A cold beer on a hot day doesn't hurt.

I'm not a "lush" by any means. I could probably give up the cold beer. But the thought of never having a good wine with a good meal again...

If I can't have what I enjoy, what's the point?

Yikes, let me clarify a few things here!

The settings describing your own habits are not the same thing as the settings describing the habits of the people you are open to being matched with.

If you never drink, then keep your self-descriptive setting on your My Settings page as “Never”. First of all, this is being honest. As a bonus, for this particular setting, selecting “Never” for yourself happens to work to your advantage. Even if a member is open to being matched with someone who drinks “Many times a day”, you would still be included in their settings and if you are compatible, you could be matched with them.

I don’t know all the details of your exchange with eHarmony (Customer Care?). Is it possible that our Customer Care team suggested opening your drinking setting to being matched with members who drink “Once a week”?

We could offer this recommendation because culturally, many people drink responsibly, such as having a glass of wine at dinner. Some people even put “A few times a year” because they may have a glass of champagne at a wedding or something similar.

To many people, this amount of alcohol intake is not considered excessive. However, if for any reason opening a setting based on our suggestions would make you uncomfortable or would conflict with your personal values, by all means, keep your settings as they are! You know yourself and your preferences better than we do.

I’m glad you said something, Knowingjesus! If you have any questions like this in the future, please don’t hesitate to contact us, or contact our Customer Care department: http://help-singles.eharmony.com/

All the best,

I too think its important that you change it to the next level, to once a week.

This is my impression of it. When you say "never". That's an absolute. For someone to say "I NEVER DRINK", its a glaring statement that begs for a question. Why?

For someone like me, I have a strong aversion to and I get no pleasure in the consumption of alcohol. I'm not quite allergic to alcohol, but i might as well be. To me, drinking alcohol in a social setting is like someone else drinking ex-lax. It gives no pleasure, but has an effect. I can't explain all this in that field and I really don't want to.

However, I don't want to say I NEVER drink, because I will once in a while. Something light that doesn't affect me (which maybe less that 1/2 a glass of something) and its a special occasion, and I will drink. I like the taste of some drinks. Also, that impression that begs for a question to be asked, is enough to form certain impressions for someone to close you when they shouldn't.

Why should it beg a question, any more than "never smoke"?
My drinking status is "never," because, well, I don't. Never have, never will. However, I don't require "never drinking" for men I'm matched with. As for the men I date, some don't drink either but most of them do drink socially; there is never a problem either way. I suppose some men have closed me because of my drinking status, but I don't care; they were strangers after all.
