A red flag for me would be "It seems like we are" in reponse to the married question. There is no "seems like" to married. You either are or you aren't. I'll be the first to admit that this is my baggage but on the occasions when I've heard this from a man, no move toward an actual marriage occurred. There was even one occasion when I heard "As far as I'm concerned, we are married - we just haven't signed the papers yet" - a huge assumption and misconception that I righted immediately.

These days, I discourage future talk, unless it's accompanied by future planning.
My experience, as well...

If someone is genuinely interested in getting married (as in married to you), there should be no need for a Merriam-Webster to decipher terms. The talk is direct and deliberate.

Throwing around the "M" word is to keep you flattered ,invested and motivated.

It doesn't mean anything other than he's enjoying you.

Look for carats....not carrots with sticks...when the "M" word is used.

Enjoy things for what they are now...in real-time, not future-time......Good Luck..

I had just said I couldn't believe I was turning 43, and he said he never thought he'd be married to someone that old. I know it sounds awful, but it was meant in good fun.

Can't say it's a bad thing that the topic has crossed his mind, but I'm happy to leave it where it is for now. Hearing (and saying) "I love you" feels right, though.

Since someone asked, his longest relationship was 4+ years.
