This... does not sound like a good situation.
I agree.

OP, you got yourself an emotionally unavailable man! He may "open-up" but he's not willing to let you into his heart. If you were only with him a few months then I can understand about him wanting to take his time to say "I love you" back but seriously; after one year's time; you should know whether or not you love someone. I think he enjoys your company, enjoys the convenience of having a girlfriend but he doesn't really love you or want anything long-term with you. He probably is having a hard time ending things because he doesn't want to be the bad guy and yet he doesn't want you to end things because he doesn't want to be rejected yet again ( i.e. wife cheating on him).

Thanks for all the replies and will take them all into consideration. As of right now, I'm still holding on and trying to enjoy my time with him. I'm telling myself that if by 6 months (won't tell him there's a timeline) and if I feel like there has been no progression and we're just going through the motions of being in a relationship then I will have to really pull through and let go as hard as it may be. He's naturally emotionally detached, I noticed his roommate is like this with his girlfriend too, they're hard people to date, but it could be that we have different attachment styles.

This weekend was really fun and he surprised me with a cute necklace and matching earrings he bought at a street art walk during his break from work and small things that show he cares for me really put me off guard and makes me smile. I don't ever ask him to buy me anything or expect him to even take me out, we take each other out and just to see that he is thinking of me makes me have hope. He said "Fridays are our night", I didn't even know we had a night but that was also cute to hear. For lunch yesterday, we went to a Japanese steakhouse and I told him I was craving omelette and he was willing to drive half an hour to take me somewhere good that served delicious breakfast, of course I told him it was okay to eat at the steakhouse since we were already there, but the thought made me smile. Sigh...some days I think of great qualities about him and other times I don't know why I'm in this relationship lol
