This is the very reason I stop all contact with my exes. It's torturous to try to remain "friends" - I honestly don't know how some people do it.
I don't know how others do it, but I learned to detach from the disappointing outcome and focus only on my affection for them as a person and my sincere wish that they be happy with someone, even if it's not me.

I don't want him to be happy with someone who isn't me! I want him to be very unhappy with someone who isn't me. Although I do give him permission to be ok if he is alone.

I think it's all academic now, he told me he'd be home by the weekend and I haven't heard from him now since last Tuesday. He's probably decided it's too much like hard work being in touch and has disappeared again.

Cue new boyfriend please eHarmony. eHarmony, did you hear that? New boyfriend please. Now. Right now please.

I can relate to this! I have someone in my past (not my ex-husband) who I have the very same feelings about.

I once thought I'd want him to be happy, no matter what. His happiness meant more to me than anything. Since he has chosen to be with someone else, I've found the best I can wish him is that he's "okay." I've decided that my happiness means more to me than his does.

It's a good thing that I almost never hear from him, and last saw him over a year ago at a mutual friend's funeral.
