I look back on my divorce, and for some dang reason, every year I think I'm smarter than I was the year before.

Not so much.

I mean, I started out in 2003, when I got my handbasket and started walking down into the sulfurous depths.

I managed to do all right through 2003, got a hotel for about a year -- dang that was expensive -- and then in 2004, I finally got one of those man-shack poor-boy deadbeat-dad apartments, the kind that smells like pot. You know... not my stash, but the neighbor's, I'm from TX, I don't do that stuff.

Anyway, 2005 was when I bottomed out. We'd been separated till then, and that's when we finally finalized. I remember pouring out a case of Bud Lite because I was desperately trying to stop drinking.

I managed to get some of my sh.t together in 2006, bought a HUD home foreclosure, fixed it up, sold it in 2008, and upgraded to what I finally considered a "reasonable" house, a place where I could nest and get my son through school. He's in 3rd grade, so I've got a while, y'know.

So, all in all, I count my "divorce age" as 6. I'm 6 years old. 6.5, really, if you consider that I was upstairs in the guest room come Jan. 2nd, 2003, just after New Years -- ain't that always the most popular day, get through the holidays. For the kids, eh.

And, at this ripe old age, I'm pretty tuckered out even talking about my divorce.

If we go out, you and I, I'd rather ~not~ discuss our divorces, yours or mine.

I'd rather not gritch or guess when you'll finalize your divorce.

I'd rather date someone close to my divorce age, and stay away from anyone younger than, say, 2 DYs (Divorce Years).

Maybe if I'd read this a few years ago, I'd thinks to meseff, "What a chuck, that guy Saul is, disrespecting me because my divorce age is only 2, or 1, or .5, or -0.5. He doesn't know what he's talking about."

Yeah, I'd think that.

I'd be wrong.

It almost 2 yrs since my divorce was final, more than 2 years since he filed, almost 3 yrs since he relocated to the guest bedroom. So not sure what my divorce age is. I moved (bought my own house) a year ago-kids are very settled in school and stuff. I am not sure I am ready but...I think (I could be wrong) that I need to get out there and test the waters. I have been a few on dates-most is 3 with one guy.

You gotta do what you gotta do, plain and simple. If others don't wish to understand, perhaps it's merely because they aren't the ones you seek. All that matters is that you understand what you need, and that you seek what you need, right?

I think you've become smarter than you've given yourself credit for, Saul.

does the 12years (length of marriage) of progressively waking up count? Marriage should have never happened...prior to marriage=MVA, TBI, coma, 6years progression from complete zombie / invalid, married pretty much the first girl I had relationship with 13 months after meeting her (oops!)

has been 3 years since actual divorce
