May I have your translation of being a special friend? Especially when your ex said that to you?

At first, I thought this post might be about imaginary friends!

I could look at that two ways:

* He's talking about a friend with benefits.

* He's talking about a friend who has special needs, such as blindness.

I would take it to mean that you hold a special place in his heart; that he cares about you.

Of course, it would help to know the context and the tone of voice he used...lol.

I've used the term to refer to a guy that I'm seeing (dating, kissing) but isn't my boyfriend (at least it hasn't been "officially" established). I usually go with the assumption that we're still just friends until otherwise *explicitly* asked to be his girlfriend. Until we reach this point, he's still my "special friend". For me, it's a way of conveying to the guy I'm dating that he's not just any guy friend, but that he's certainly not my boyfriend either....he's somewhere in between (butdefinitely has relationship potential). Just my perspective; I'm curious to see how others define this term.....

If your ex called you a "special friend" and you're being intimate (kissing, etc.) andthere's a possibility of re-establishing a relationship, then the term may be a way of letting you know that she's interested in something more than just being cool friends. The tricky part will be figuring out what that "something more" may be.... If you still have strong feelings for her, then you may consider asking her directly what she means by "special friend" and whether she sees a possibility of re-establishing a relationship (if this is what you're interested in)....when in doubt, it's best to ask if possible.

...Best wishes

Hmm can't say I would usually use that phrase talking to guys or friends. If I was going to say something...I'd just tell someone they were special to me...or a special type of person.

Special friend could be positive but I've heard it more often in reference to trying to avoid a deeper connection. Like "she's a special friend but not someone i could love".

I think I'd ask to see what your ex means by saying it...

We broke up few months ago but still keep communicating sometimes. He once emailed and saidsomething like when he found a better job, he will take me out to dinner because I'm his special friend. I just feel something subtle and am a bit confused. I know he doesn't want to have a relationship cos' of stressand that's why we broke up.

Okay; then I vote for my definition...lol. Even though you are not bf/gf, you are a special person in his life and he still values you.

You could ask him, of course!

This part sounds like "You're my special friend and if I buy you dinner, can we have sex?"

In general he may mean it as "You're someone that I have deep affection for but am never willing to let myself become in a relationship with again. [But you'll always have a special place in my heart!]"

neardc, I like your definition...makes me feel warm no matter whether it is exactly what he meant. Well, I am not going to ask him since there is no point if he is still not ready for a relationship though I still have deep feeling for him. However, it is always good to know he still values me special in his life and we didn't have an ugly broke up
