Elite University Graduates Only Allowed on New Invite-Only Dating Site

So did anyone else catch this story today? This new dating site, which is invitation only, only allows men who can prove that they graduated from one of a select group of universities. The premise is that, according to their research, men want a woman who has a college education but it's not important where the degree is from or what subjects they studied. Women, on the other hand, want "ambitious men who graduated from prestigious schools."

I never really thought about where a man went to school when I was online. Did you?

I didn't see the story, but there are certainly dating sites out there that only accept men and women from Ivies and a few other high-quality schools. I went to an Ivy school for grad work and there are always ads for school-based dating services in the alumni magazine.

I am always interested in where a man went to school, but it's a data point in the big picture. Book smarts and street smarts are not the same thing, and it's my belief that street smarts are worth much, much more. Some of the most intelligent, savvy, and successful people I've ever met in my life either went to a mediocre school or didn't go to college at all.

I don't care if a guy went to college at all, let alone what college, as long as he has a good job. Like barb, I'd rather have a guy w/ street smarts and common sense than a guy who has a lot of book knowledge.

Damn. Oh well, there's at least one dating site I won't bother with.

I dropped out of high school to go to college, then dropped out of college to start consulting. Worked for a large company for four months, then for a tiny firm for five years as Director of Development, then on my own again, ever since then.

So at least I did finish 11th grade, LOL!

I don't remember if it was the same site, but I remember seeing a news story about a dating site for graduates of so-called "elite" universities at least two years ago. At the very least it's not a new concept.

Interesting. I like intelligent, educated guys and don't care how "good" their job is as long as it pays their bills, so I guess we're opposites in that regard. I still wouldn't join a site like this one, though.

Are you saying you can't be intelligent unless you have a degree? I don't date stupid either, and I don't think anybody says "I want to date someone stupid!" at least when looking for a long term relationship. Usually being naturally intelligent is one of the biggest factors for being street smart and having common sense.

I don't have a degree but nobody would ever accuse me of not being intelligent. My dad didn't have a degree and he was the owner of a successful business. I am no slouch in the career department either, I'm one of the best there is in my field in my area, according to colleagues. I didn't learn what I do by going to college, I learned it by being thrown into it with zero training. Just picked up on it and figured it out. I do currently attend classes to work on my degree, and have gone to college in the past, but my hangup every time has been that what they teach in college has absolutely no relevance for "real life" (with the exception of maybe the math and science fields). I still feel that way so who knows if I will finish it this time around. So far the only "useful" class I have taken this time around is a foreign language class.

So anyway, maybe I'm a bit sensitive to this topic, but the idea that a degree = intelligence has always bugged me.

My ex was an MIT grad. Not an Ivy school, but certainly elite in its own techie way. Didn't make him a good husband.

Well, where one gets the degree does make a difference if one is going to work for someone else. A liberal arts degree from an Ivy league school can get you a job paying six figures whereas the same degree from a state school will have one selling shoes at a local department store.
