From the article:

wrote :
Anyone who has ever joined an online dating site can probably speak about the risks: the creepy messages, bad dates and failed relationships. But Illinois lawmakers believe there is more than just emotional danger lurking online, and could muscle dating sites into requiring criminal background checks.
That's actually a little overstated. The requirement would be that dating sites would be required to tell users whether or not they've done criminal background checks.

Also from the article:

wrote :
The Internet Alliance, which represents eHarmony and Match.com, is opposed to the measure. A spokeswoman for IA told the Tribune it would be overly burdensome for dating sites.
Is this a law you would support? Would you make a choice on using a dating site based on whether or not it did criminal background checks on members?

It would depend upon whether or not the offense was also stated as I'm far more likely to date a guy busted for dope in his teens or twenties than I am a guy that raped his last girlfriend.

Also, I don't trust that eH would do a good enough job of it for it to be reliable. You'd probably only be able to see it if you were a paying member. Free weekend users could just take their chances I imagine.

I would not support it at all, and not use a site that required me to go through a criminal background check.

I do not submit to it to date someone I meet in real life, so would not do it for an online site.

Also, I don't think it can be done thoroughly anyway. I have been through a security clearance check, and follow-ups and it is a very long process, I don't see someone joining for a month or three wanting to wait that long.

Even the "life scan" they do for foster parents is a long process.

I think if people are smart about meeting in a public place for a first date, not getting into their car or going to their home, there is no reason to do something like this.

People have dated for years before the internet and never required a background check to get to a first date.

Use your common sense, trust your instincts, and there should be no reason to fear people and the world so much. And for goodness sake...HAVE FUN!!!

No. I think it's idiot law, and a dumb waste of tax money, an example of needless, expensive regulation of free enterprise.

It is pointless, as it can easily evaded, and thus gives a false sense of security to the very people who most need a nanny state in the first place, and it opens a business up to lawsuits when the information is wrong, or the felon snuck through.

Further, I do not provide personal information to entertainment businesses.

I want to borrow $500 k, I'll give out my social security number; not a dating site.

I would imagine that I am capable of a more thorough background check than would be provided by a dating service if I think one is necessary...and no one need ever know the difference. It's just an excuse to add more cost to subscriptions for an illusion of security. Some of the scariest people in history had no criminal records...until it was too late.

I would also not participate in a dating service that required me to be subjected to a background check.

I'm in agreement with this. There are things that I wish dating sites did differently, but this isn't one of them. Seems like an unnecessary hassle for everyone involved.

I keep hearing a political advertisement in my head:

"Representitive Big BlabbyMouth says he's in favor of small government, but in 2012 he voted in favor of the Force Dating Sites to Become Adjuncts of a Police State Act."

I agree with what's been said so far. I don't think this is a good law and I think it provides a false sense of security. I also don't believe that an online dating service is truly capable of performing a proper criminal background check. I have nothing in my criminal background, not even a speeding ticket or a parking ticket. I've never been asked for a background check, but at the same time, I'm not sure I'd want to date someone that would require one before dating either.
