Recently I met few people that are really into dance. now I am thinking about trying some classes or workshops. But I am absolutely clueless. I don't know what to do, what to wear, what kind of shoes do I need, where I can find a partner (do I need a partner???), what is the etiquette, rules.
I checked community centers- they have classes, and it said "no partner required". I don't understand- how to practice ballroom dance without a partner?
Some of my friends go to clubs for workshops.
Can I go to a club by myself? (haha- question from the person with the zero experience).
I know, sounds stupid , but my life was so busy with completely different things for many-many years.
I heard some dance studios have workshops. But I have no idea how it looks like.

I am mostly interested in ballroom dance, but can try other things also.

Any advice is welcome! Thank you very much!

Hi Biking_girl,

I've not tried ballroom dancing yet (would love to!), but go to a community swing dance where no partner is required. It's called "social dancing," because everyone just rotates partners all night, whether you came with a partner or alone. The same group also does 6-week lessons through a community center (no partner required).

The one I attend is very casual and attended by men and women from age 18 to as high as 70+.

The instructors and some of the long-time dancers have the leather-soled shoes, but they aren't necessary, especially when you're just trying it out to see if you like it. If you decide to stick with it, ask some of the other dancers in the group, and you may find that, like in our group, they found a nearby shoe shop that will put leather on the soles of a pair of shoes they already own for a reasonable fee.

Good luck and enjoy!
