This is true.

This makes me wonder though - for those people who are struggling with the social interaction thing, is the internet exaserbating their failures and their shortcomings? Are they just going to use the internet as an excuse not to get out at all?

I realize that some people have serious issues about getting out and meeting people. I think it's called agoraphobia - the fear of public places - I could be wrong. For these people, the internet is a wonderful place to start communicating with the outside world.

There are some people who don't have this condition though. Are these the people that are going to use the internet as an excuse for not overcoming their problems and challenges?
Could look at it that way. Could look at it another way too.

It's also possible that warming up into communicating online can create an enticement and an incentive to ultimately get out and meet and so start overcoming their issues. Whereas before no such incentive existed. One thing that's probably hard for many to understand is that a person who is not social doesn't feel the same need for company that social people do and so don't have the same degree of motivation to get out there.

So the internet possibly creates this avenue for them where they don't really have to get out, but can still socialize to a certain degree. However, developing relationships and plain human curiosity could possibly entice them to make a greater effort and actually go meet at some point even if highly selectively and seldom.
