I was thinking the other day about the variety of strategies you see in profile pictures. Since I only look for women, that's what I have to base it on. Generally speaking, there are 5 categories. Scantily clad pics designed to make you more desirable, common every day look, your lifestyle (pets, kids, skydiving), your friends (you with a bunch of other girls, best guy friend/brother), and what you would look like on a date.

So I ask myself, what do I prefer? To clarify, what do I want to see in someone I would date (to eliminate any confusion about scantily clad pics). Generally, I think I just want to see the date pics. I want to have an idea of what she's going to be like on a date...because that's how I would meet her. I don't want to surprises.

Secondary would be lifestyle if it's something that's really important. Seeing a pic of you running a marathon makes sense if you do that often...it doesn't if it was one time thing a year ago. In a bikini makes sense if you spend a lot of time in one...it doesn't if you're going for scantily clad.

Maybe that's just me. Does that make sense for a woman looking at a guy's profile?

The most common style I see is a picture of her next to a clearly less attractive woman so she can look better by virtue of comparison.

add 2 more...
- What's the fastest way I can get a pic of myself? Use my cell phone to take a picture of myself in the bathroom mirror or hold it out at arms length pointing at myself.
- Professionally taken posed pictures or glamour type shots.

I find the most appealing shots are either candid shots or posed yet casual looking shots where you can see the person's features clearly.

I prefer
1. Everyday pics
2. Activity / lifestyle pics
3. Both of the above scantily clad.

I prefer pictures of the match alone, dressed as is typical for leisure time with her partner.

I don't like "lifestyle" photos - they are usually awful photos. Better to just describe the lifestyle.

I like the bathing suitsin theory (the match should be attractive and comfortable with it) - but the people I meet tend not to do such things on an interent site.

I don't like bad self-portaits.

Crowds of people and distractions always ruin a photo.

Most travel photos are bad, and shouldn't be used.

I am okay with a bad photo if the situation is an unusual accomplishment (winning the race, not starting the race.)

It makes great sense. I agree with everything you said. Some men however will complain that women do not show enough; meaning they are looking for certain features.

Well, I do look for certain features, but I don't want close up their best feature without equal time for the not so good features.

I go for the scantily clad photos myself Sadly they are rather few and far between

Truthfully I would like to see more than one photo. At least a bust type head shot, not too close and not too far away. And a standing full body shot. They should be good photographically, i.e. in focus, proper lighting, etc. While beach or pool photos are common for my matches, the beach is close and everyone has a pool here. However scantily clad photos that are obviously there for the cheesecake indicate that the match I would have different and incompatible values.

I prefer not to see the pictures of you holding a cat, child, or dog that you obviously borrowed and are using as a prop, thanks to some asinine article that makes you believe you're more desirable. (I'm an animal lover by the way.)

I prefer not to see you leaning against an expensive car (I'm not at all impressed with what you have, and turned off by your insecurity) Why do you need validation you are worthy?

The active pictures make me cringe. Fine if you're a runner, but come on you aren't jumping out of planes or diving off cliffs everyday.

The pictures minus shirt with belt buckle open are real turn offs.

What I do like is a nice close up facial shot and a full body shot. I prefer to see one casual photo and one of you all cleaned up. No contrived photos please. Keep it simple and keep the skin under wraps for another time.
