in their emails. What are we supposed to do with them? Why men give their phone numbers? I don't like calling guys especially during the first few contacts....

Generally, you use phone numbers to call people and talk them on the phone. If you want to ignore how your match wishes to communicate that is always your option.

hahaha....of course I understand they want me to call them but it is just strange....."here is my number, call me or text me".

Do you, ladies, call the guys after they had given their numbers? I am still new to online dating hence the silly questions

Haven't you ever had a man you met in person give his number to you?

I have called. A match gave me his number when he asked to meet. We talked for a bit and set up a date. No big woop. Most guys do this out of consideration knowing women are more concerned about personal safety. Do it if you're serious about meeting him.

Usually they'll ask for mine in return. Even if he does not, I'll simply reply giving mine. If he can't figure out from there how to pick up the phone and call and waits for me to move things along, it's a quick and easy way to weed out men not worth meeting.

Yup. Think of it as being a way that the man shows consideration for your possible safety concerns. Many of us would rather hold off on sharing our phone numbers until we can get the sense that the guy isn't going to abuse it by calling incessantly.

If you really don't want to be the one making the phone call, then thank him for his number, give him yours and explain that you're old-fashioned about these things. Don't leave him guessing about who takes the next step.

I had this happen to me. The second email I got back from a match said that she preferred the phone for getting to know someone, but it had no phone number. So I wrote back and told her that was fine and gave her my number and told her that it was easiest for me to talk after I put my boys to bed. I was free by 8:45 the next two nights. She said, ok thanks. Then emailed back later to give me her number. She never called. Turns out she expected me to call.

So yes, ladies if you have an issue about dialing the phone yourself, please let us know.

Wouldn't a considerate guy also include his reasoning for dropping the number?

I don't disagree that there are considerate men out there, however IMO.. a large percentage of these number droppers do it as a test to see how interested you really are. The number droppers also view it as not being pushy or aggressive by giving the control to the woman.. Either that or they're bored, or losing interest.

I have had women from online dating sites ask me for my phone number so that they can call me and block their number so that I will not know their phone number. As has been mentioned, if you don't want to make the first call to your match then you can reply with an e-mail with your phone number and that you would prefer him to make the first call. You may want to also include a time when you would be available to talk.
