I am in open communication with a new match. We have exchanged several emails in the last week or so. He informed me today they are cutting back at his job and may close his plant in a few weeks due to the issues in Japan. Help! I do not know what to say to this guy about this, we have never even spoke on the phone. Don't want to mess this up.
why do you think you need to say anything special to him about that?

to those who asked...

Why would people use "Japan" as an excuse or a reason or use that tragedy to scam other people? Serious? It happens all the time.

For instance, you could use the same reasoning that nobody woudl dare use 9/11 to scam people right? WRONG! I witnessed somebody completely make up lies about himself and say he was involved in 9/11 (as a rescuer) and telling all these stories to hook women into him.... it was all a scam.

Does it mean this person is scamming? No.. of course not. But is it possible? ABSOLUTELY... especially on the internet and especially when there has been no personal/direct contact except internet communications.

So, as I mentioned in my original response ~ it would behoove the OP to check out a couple of things and consider a few things and see if it fits and is reasonable, or if it doesn't, and to be cautious.

Completely different. The guys pretending to be involved in 9/11 were saying they were heroic.

The guy mentioning Japan as a cut back is not pretending to heroic. He was saying work is bad (ie cutbacks) and this is the reason why-Japan. If he were making it up, he could just say the plant's shutting down.

In today's economy, who would really doubt that. Is Japan really the first reason you would think to make up, IF it weren't true? Couldn't he just blame it on outsourcing?

As I mentioned before, I think this can be taken at face value. I think until he proves to do something truely suspicious or shady, believe it.
