I would like woman to explain how and where they like a man to initially approach them. Also, I would like to know what women don't like about how men have initially approached them.

Hey Ray,

There are some men that can always approach a women and also most always say the right thing. It's called strength of character! A smile and project a warm friendly self and lady's enjoy a short chat with them.

And there are some men that trip over a crack in the side walk, as well as their tongues! It's called self confidence and the ability to project themselves in a warn and friendly way. Has nothing to do with looks it's how you project yourself.

I'm sure this doesn't help but that is the way it is!

So which is it - do they trip all over themselves or do they have 'self-confidence'? You are contradicting yourself.

What are some things men say and do that make women more comfortable when they are approached?

In my experience, some lighthearted spontaneous humor works rather well. Anything that is blatantly obvious to the situation you're in.

If you can't come up with anything, you can always go with "Hi, I'm _name_, and try as I might I just can't come up with a good way to break the ice, so I'm hoping my smile will do the trick" and this where you plant a big fat smile on your face .

Disclaimer: I have not tested out the above yet. In fact, I JUST came up with it.

EDIT: And in the words of Barney Stinson: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

Lol, that is too funny, especially after I imagined it in my head. Wouldn't online dating help some of those men, as that first step is basically done through the interwebs?

Depends where we are.

Out and about in public -- on the street, in a class or at work or a gym -- anyplace where men/women meeting is not the main thing going on -- keep a little physical distance, no touching, be friendly, polite, kind. Good eye contact. Smile. Don't start walking along with me unless I invite you to.

At a party/bar -- anyplace where men/women expect to meet each other -- closer physical distance is ok, light touching of "public" parts (shoulder, hand) is ok, and otherwise the same: friendly, polite, kind, good eye contact, smile, and don't follow me unless I invite you.

As for what you say -- almost anything is ok, as long as it's not dirty, or hate speech. Funny is good but not required if you're not that type of guy. Something related to where we are and what we're doing is good, since it's easier to get a conversation going then.

Couple of very simple things will help. Relaxed body language. Lean back a little, don't crowd her, don't creep over all gittery and nervous. Smile, laugh. Also, let her know you aren't going to bother her all night. A simple, hey, i have to get back to my friends but just wanted to introduce myself will let her know she doesn't have to flee cause you will leave her alone if she wants.

If you aren't really nervous around women my best advice is to simply go somewhere women are (virtually everywhere) and simply approach some. You will pretty quickly find out what works for you and what doesn't and, after awhile, you will start to wear down your anxiety about talking to strangers. If you are really nervous, it doesn't hurt to practice in front of a mirror at home and act out conversations. You may even want to go to some of the pickup sites and memorize some of the standard approaches. They aren't ideal but they can be a good crutch to lean on when you first start.
