Some of you may've read about the match with whom I was considering breaking my present, hermitic lifestyle over. That and the fact that I was petrified to talk on the phone.

Well, we set it up for today. He called me as I was rustling the shopping in, and I returned the call once I got situated. It was not hard to get started so much as it required effort, as with setting a stationary object in motion. His voice is very calm and gentle, which helped to put me at ease (and was not what I'd imagined.)

We talked for an hour over any number of things that I hardly ever get to talk about (and yes, I do need to get out more): our parents and what brought us to the same city, the fact that we are both scientifically-minded and its consequences, what reason means to us.... Hey, you in the back! Wake up there! ...and even weightier subjects. Then he asked me out for a drink. We'll do that next week. I remembered to tell him how it'd been a long time since I got to enjoy a conversation like that. And it has.

Next up: the first meeting (or more realistically, pre-meeting jitters.)

bien

I find a Beer helps to calm my nerves.

And a bottle of wine. Then, I'm ready to talk on the phone.

But not sure if I should?

Congratulations! That was easier than you thought it would be, wasn't it.

When is the meeting set for?

Remember that he'll probably be just as nervous as you.

Yeah, D_Lion, I think I could make a mint on a breathalyzer but for cell phones instead of cars.

Bien VBG and BTHT, thank you for the good words. He was less comfortable talking than I was, so it allowed me to think about how to make GOOD conversation much earlier. Then we opened up about music, and it was First Phone Call FTW. We're going to try to meet up next Sunday. It's always good when you can make a serious guy laugh aloud.

Sounds like you're on a roll, good luck! Don't blow it by drinking, it won't make you seem like a more fun, relaxed person, it will mess up your judgment

Bien Wiseman and penpen,

I'm glad of your take on this. Wiseman, since both he and I consume alcohol and he invited me for 'a drink,' I intend to act accordingly and, if it is a Beverage of the Night, have just that: one drink. I am nervous, but neither young nor fooliish (okay, I'm early- thirties... but I'm not foolish.)

At which time, I'll either gracefully go home or tell him it's as great as I hoped it'd be and suggest a more lengthy meeting.

Penpen, he's really smart and cute, and I'm really smart and cute and nervous, so unless someone poofs, this one is for the books.

I'd go as far as two drinks. Besides, you can always switch to something non-alcoholic if you are really enjoying yourself and don't want the evening to end.

Quite right VB; I do not intend to go farther than a couple glasses of wine and some ginger ale, and if he asks, I'll tell him it's too important to trust to EtOh. Which is true.
