Somehow, this doesn't sound like a good idea for a first 'date'.

What say you?

I think it sounds fine. I'd prefer a chance to talk afterward, but there's nothing wrong with an activity.

Just let the Wookie win.

I've done it, it's a bit more awkward than one would think, because you even if you are just hitting, you are too far away to talk between points. If you are playing a game, there is the whole "how hard do you play?" question. Seldom are you both really at the same level.

Golf, on the other hand, makes a pretty good first date. Especially if you have a 9 hole course. You aren't really competing against each other, and there is lots of time to chat between shots.

How about being sweaty; not looking your best. And there's the chance that one is a sore loser.

How is this any different than meeting at a gym when both of you are releasing those pheremones?

If both find out they like to play tennis...then why not.

Putt Putt golf is a good activity.

As an only activity, I would not want to meet without a chance to have a conversation.

This is an excellent chance to see how in shape your match is (which most people are lacking), and how competitive they are (ditto.)

Also, if this is something you both listed as a hobby in your profiles - and especially if it's one you wish to share - then I favor doing it.

I did bowling once. Not much of a chance to talk during the game. (He was up, or I was--no downtime when it's just two of you!)

I felt like it was a little awkward, but that could've been the guy & not the activity...
