I am sure many of you have been in situations where you have come across someone you dated and they dont remember who you are.

This happens to me. I have something called face blindness or prosopagnosia.

For some its severe where they cant even recognize themselves in the mirror. For some they recognize their immediate family and close friends. For others it takes them a few meetings to remember who you are.

What causes this...

1. genertics
2. A neurological condition or vision impairment ar a toddler which affected brain development.
3. Old age.
4. Head injury or head trauma. Even something such as a serious concussion.

So what many people who have it have learned to do are tricks to remember someone. They learn their voice, their body size, style, hair color and style, skin color, glasses, facial air...and most of all context and expectation.

For me, I learn who my coworkers are. So I recognize them at work. If I happen to run into them by chance in a store or restaurant then I will likely walk right by them without evcn acknowledging them unless I get cues from them saying hi.

I have had women walk up to me because they recognize me but I dont remember them.

If I go back to my hometown and se some friends and they radically change their hairstyle or hair color without telling me I will have trouble recognizing them...even when I am expecting to see them (like we are all meeting at a restaurant for drinks).

I also have trouble finding people in crowds.

An associated memory problem is recalling names. I have trouble recalling names so if I am introduced to 20+ people at one time I will not remember their names. I also have problems associating names and faces. This is true in real life and on TV shows.

For example I watched ER so I knew the characters and how they associated with each other and what their roles are...but if you asked me what their name was as a fill in the blank I would fail 75% of the time...if it were multiple choice I would be 90% correct.

If they dont remember your face or your name....it doesnt mean they're being rude or thoughtless....its because they cant remember.

This is wonderful! Thank you for the post and for the word prosopagnosia. I now have a word to identify my problem with remembering names and faces-out-of-context--if I can remember it.

I recently met twice with the carpenter who was to build me a shed. When he came to my house to measure up, I didn't have a clue who he was. Fortunately, he was very understanding.
