Am I living in the dark ages? Is is ok to ask a guy to be physically exclusive before you have sex with him? In this day of HIV and other STDs I feel that it is a health choice and not necessarily related to the seriousness of the relationship.

Yes it's ok to ask for that and many people do. Many others don't -- they're probably not compatible with you.

It is more than "okay." I would demand this.

Multiple partners is too much risk, with no ofsetting benefit.

I think it's completely your choice to want to be exclusive before agreeing to be physical... Also, you need to make sure you're clear on what you're asking for... are you saying exclusive physically... or exclusive?

There seems to be a trend now where both partners can "date" other people, as long as they are not having "$ex" with other people. I don't get it... but some women/men seem to find this acceptable.

You have every right to ask and, considering today's risk factors I personally mandate such in a relationship. I also concur that today, exclusivity is not necessarily reflective of the nature or seriousness of a relationship. It comes down to self preservation and condoms are inadequate.

If the other person fails to appreciate my point of view or is the least hesitant in supporting my position I rule them out as a partner. As much as I enjoy intimacy, the downside risk of exposure from multiple partners isn't worth it.
