eH by the numbers is tops in the online dating market. The article is from 2009, most recent numbers I could dig up. Other ten and their numbers are in the link below.

In Depth: The 10 Top Online Dating Sites - Forbes.com

Ran across more numbers in some article about millionaire matchmaking sites online.

How To Find A Millionaire (Or Billionaire) - Forbes.com

While options abound in online dating, the number of U.S. visitors to dating sites has fallen steadily from a peak of 21% of all Internet users in 2003 to 10% in 2006, according to JupiterResearch. The technology-research firm said the industry hasn't been able to convince the public that dating sites have high-quality members and that they're safe places to share personal information.
And this tidbit was also kind of interesting

Edgy newcomer Do U Like hasn't been around a full year but has rocketed to No. 7, with 1.9 million uniques per month. Unlike other dating sites, users must post their photos--racy poses encouraged. If you like what you see, you click on the photo; if you want to see who "liked" you, check the "Mutual Sympathy" inbox. Price for such near-instant gratification: $20 a month.

You were mentioning a propitious drop in matches, D. Their business increased 48 percent I think it said from the whatever year before the report figures were compiled from.

I haven't found anything more recent yet.

I saw that too.

My experience is the late December through March having a higher baseline of activity, then April and May being nearly nothing.

That's as long as I've been using it (since many years ago.)

Interestingly, eHarmony is admitting to something that has been reported in the New York Times, too: that economic downturns cause poeple to seek to upgrade their partner.

I'd like to find out what proportion of people listed on each site find a partner there. Just knowing how many people are members doesn't tell us much about the effectiveness of the site. It does tell us how successful their advertising is, though. It may also say something about the user-friendliness of the site, but it's hard to say.

This has been posted before.

It's fading out of my memory, but I think eHarmony claim 200-some marriages per day, and something like 2.5% of US marriages being due to it.

Very interesting, thank you annother for posting that link.

I'm kind of interested in that True.com site. They do a criminal background check on all their clients, and kick out anyone who is married.

I wonder why more of the dating sites don't do that? It can't be that hard to do as a matter of routine for each client, and I think it would improve their product tremendously.

There was an effort in the US to require dating sites to do background checks but Match.com and PlentyofFish fought against it saying it would create a false sense of security.

Because it is easy to circumvent, and respesents an increase in expenses which requires a higher price, which many people will not pay.

This also renders a site a much wose deal for people not living in very populated areas (since a dating site is no good at all if there are not some level of users in your community.)

Such information is also massively error-prone (heck, even the US government apparently can't figure the different between guys with militant Pakistani agitprop and a ten-year old from Boise.)

Further, claiming to perform these (easily circumvented) checks invites liability.
