How to start the first conversation?

A bit of a question for all of you - I usually start a conversation with "Hey, how's it going?". I know this is generic, but it's an icebreaker at least. Now say the girl responds "it's going fine" and then doesn't say anything else - do I press her and ask something else, or is that a clear indication she's not interested?

That works for me! I always respond with "It's going great! How are you?"

Honestly, I can handle just about anything a guy throws at me. The only time I was stumped was when a guy said, "Alright, I'm not very good at icebreakers, but I'll give it a shot. What is your opinion on Anime and Japanese culture's effect on America?"

Well sitting here at the bar I would say that Buffalo has big horns.....yeah that will get them.

Honestly you have to be yourself. Silly comments like that are who I am so it works for me. Find yourself and go from there.

She is answering the question. At point you have to look at her body language. Did she respond and is now turning or edging away from you or is she looking at you waiting for you to continue the conversation? Proceed accordingly.
