Dirty Jokes or vulgar stories on a first date.

I had this experience yet one more time, last week. I'm on a first date with a guy who seems very nice thus far. Even says that he considers himself a gentleman, which he seems to be - opens the doors for me, let's me order first, etc. Impressive so far. Then it happens. During lunch he says he has to tell me a story..and proceeds to tell me a penis story - one involving his brother's penis. Ttotally unrelated to anything we were talking about up till then, which was food, wine, and travel. We hadnt been drinking, nor had I said or done anything risque. I hid my annoyance, and disappointment in his lack of good judgement. When he ended his story, I changed the topic. A half hour later he wanted to tell me a joke, and then told a joke about penises. I can't count how often men have brought up a patently sexual topic, or told a dirty joke on a first date. I wondered if I were the only woman to be so turned off by what I saw as adolescent behavior. I asked 6 female friends, who all felt the same way. BTW - none of us are prudes - we're sexually comfortable and seasoned gals in our forties. After discussing this, we agreed that men must do this to "test the waters" - to determine whether we're frigid, or good in bed, based on our reactions.

So I ask the men- why would men do this?
And I ask other women - how would you handle this when it happens?

And if I may offer my opinion/advice to men who do this: A true gentleman knows how to make a woman feel comfortable. Telling dirty jokes or vulgar stories to a gal you just met has the opposite effect, and is rude at best, at least to the woman I've asked. And it's inappropriate, even offensive to illicit our reactions and then make assumptions about our sexual prowess or style.
