As technology has increased the ability to transport people, goods and information the world has become a ‘smaller’ place. Perhaps this trend will even expand moreso into the dating world in the future.

A global marketplace and global competition has impacted business….but hasn’t seemed to have had as large of an effect on dating. This is probably in part because finding a partner generally requires quite a bit of personal contact…which is still not very easy (requiring long, expensive flights etc.).

However, as technology advances and things such as people being able to ‘telemute’ and perform their jobs from any location, it may become even easier for people to select partners from across the globe. This could lead to some interesting changes in societies….both in its implications for dating/partner selection and also an increased blending of various cultures. For example, I was hearing on the radio today how in China there is a high ratio of males to females. This would be a great potential ‘market’ for women from other countries to find men in.

I would guess that as technology, trade, information flow etc. increase that inter-country ‘dating/mate selection’ is likely to increase. Any ideas on what it might mean for dating? Would this be a good or bad thing? What would be the effect of men and woman having to 'compete' with others from across the globe for mates?

I think that technology has played a role in dating. Before online dating, and online communities, people generally met their partners through the community (includes work) or at college. Now you can get to know anyone, anywhere.

All of a sudden I feel like imported goods....bad fruit maybe?

Dating is hard enough without knowing a few million women are competing for the same guy you are interested in.

Online dating has made the competition fierce. I have seen way too many people treat it like kids in a candy store...and always wondering who else is out there. That's one reason people rarely have second dates, because their date likely has guy/girl #129 already lined up.

One of the major drawbacks to "world dating" is eventually going to be permission to enter a country. Unless partners are willing to put the time and invest lots of cash into travel to see each other, it will be very difficult to get to know someone well enough for one person to make the international move, let alone for both partners to commit to a marriage to make that possible (for a visa) if that would be necessary. I imagine very few people have the patience, financial resources and the desire to follow that course when there are so many people already online within the country to date.

For countries with a skewed ratio of men and women, the mail-order bride is not a new concept.

I don't disagree with your basic premise that technology has shrunk the world.

However, I think that you have over looked a few things.
1. You cannot really get to know someone until you meet in person. This still requires physically being in the same place and spending a fair amount of time together.
2. Ultimately one person is going to required to move to where the other is. Many people are not willing to do this.
3. When you are looking at the world you have all of the challenges of race, ethnicity, culture that muddy the waters.

This was dealt with on Oprah yesterday.

Cultural and financial differences make dating internationally a complete waste of time, not to mention the huge travel expenses. There are major pitfalls waiting as well: The USA is top rank in standard of living with people in many other parts of the world almost starving to death with a cardboard roof over their heads. The thing is, they have internet access and they are actively looking to either escape their country to the USA or to scam love starved citizens of the USA. Its big business. Good luck navigating that swamp. Why bother when there are 10000s of cultural matches for you right here within a few hundred miles of you? This is the voice of experience as I've dated internationally, successfully, and would never do it again.

There is no doubt that technology has made it easier to meet people, and also while flying is still too expensive for a lot of people to do all the time but it is cheaper than it used to be. I think with cheap communications via VOIP as well that it makes it easier to meet people around the world. With video conferencing it is even better. No doubt the dating pool keeps getting larger.

I was in a LDR for over 2 years. Because I don't work I could travel whenever and stay for longer periods of time. When he was in Europe on business, I would fly out there and he would stay with me when in the UK. I was asked to move over there and I said yes (didn't happen for other reasons) as I don't find moving to another country a problem. I have already lived in 5 different countries due to moving around with the job and my 3 children live in 3 different countries.
But I can see it being a problem for a person with family and friends close by.
