I thought I'd throw this out there in case it helps someone...

I know many people are concerned about giving out their phone number, in case the other person turns out to have stalker tendencies.

Many stores (such as Walmart) sell prepaid cell phones, which have no ongoing contract and are pretty cheap. You just buy a block of minutes to use when you want.

If you get one of these phones it lets you give out a number where you can be reached without giving out your home, work, or real cell numbers. You can wait til you trust the person more to give those out. They won't be able to get your physical address from your prepaid number like they can with other phone numbers, since it's not tied to you. You can get one without anyone knowing you're the phone's owner.

You can probably forward the prepaid number to your real number for your convenience.

If someone turns out to be a creep or stalker and won't stop calling you, at least they won't have your main numbers and you can dump that prepaid phone and replace it with another one. Much better than having to change your main numbers that many people have.

Another option is Skype, which uses your computer to make phone calls, so it's not portable like a cell. You can call other Skype accounts for free, or for $3 a month you can call any phone numbers in the US. You need a headset and the sound quality is very good.

The prepaid phone is a great idea. eHarmony may want to put in their safety tips section.

If someone is "that dangerous," they can always follow you home.

My biggest fear of giving out my number is that the woman won't call me.

I read this and first thought I must be way paranoid, because this doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. But this isn't a bad idea even outside the world of dating. I use meetup.com some and have to give my number out a lot to organize gatherings. I've always been just a little antsy about giving my number out to any of the random members in my group. Definitely something worth considering.

I use a prepaid cell phone myself and like to use that number to give out to strangers and businesses. Especially if I am doing something like joining a group (softball team off Craigslist) or trying to coordinate with new people at some kind of meet. My prepaid phone might be switched off for days or weeks sometimes, so there is no bother with unwanted phone calls.

I have elderly family members who have had health issues (one being an aunt who passed away this autumn) and most people I know live in different time zones. I would never want to be out of reach for emergencies.

My prepaid phone costs me $20 every 3 months to maintain the line, so it's easy to separate important from unimportant communication.

Does it otherwise have all the functions of a standard mobile phone?

I spend more than that each month.

I'm not sure what the standard mobile features are:

text, voicemail, call display, alarm, calculator, a couple curappy games...what else?

My phone is almost 7 years old too, so it might be a little less advanced features-wise. I haven't looked at what the current pay-as-you go models offer.
