Can I ask why do people with non-American accents sound like Americans when they sing? Not all - but a surprising lot do.

Weird.
Interesting because, in classical music, we're taught to sing with an almost British accent. It's technically just more open (in a nutshell), but it comes out sounding British.

No, you're absolutely right! In pop/rock music, it's because people are accustomed to hearing the "American accent" and they copy the sounds, not just the words. For instance, you can usually tell which version of a song someone has heard by the way they sing it because they have the same inflections as the original artist. If it's a song you like and have listened to over and over, you have to make a conscious decision to change parts of it to make it your own.

In classical music, it's because we are taught to sing with a more open throat (raising the soft palate) so most of the vowel sounds come out like "ah". We are supposed to skim over the letter R, if we pronounce it at all. So we don't sing "Never", we sing "Nevah" and in a word like "Paris" it's almost more of a flick than a full R. It's more complicated than that, but you get the idea. And somehow it comes out sounding British.

That is really interesting, Chawks!

You do realize that I will now ask you to sing something when I meet ya'. But don't worry - I like anyone that sings - fantastic, good, bad - I don't care - I love it all! lol!! We should go to a karaoke place.

That sounds great! But just be warned - if it's early in the evening, it's the sultry 40s standards. As the beer starts flowing, I somehow end up with Garth Brooks!
