I don't buy that definition - accumulation has nothing to do with it - not being self-aware has everything to do with it.

I think you need to come up with a new term that fits your definition Lizzie. 'Baggage' are things you pick up at some point and continue carrying around with you. You aren't born with 'baggage'.

But actually I do agree with you that the critical factor is the self-awareness, or maybe emotional maturity. What I do find though is that a lack of this does seem to cause a progressive degeneration with the accumulation of more life experiences...especially bad ones.

I think people should stop focusing on baggage as stuff. Baggage is what people make of it.

The focus should be on why baggage people do that? It is not the stuff that is of interest, it is why do some people carry this stuff with them and others do not.

And sorry, JayJay - baggage handlers are always baggage handlers whether they have bags to carry yet or not. It is not the stuff that makes them this way, they make the stuff this way.

Fair enough. But, the original premise of my thread addressed the view of people who have previously written on 'baggage' threads and who disagree with your view.

With regard to your view of what baggage is....these people who are self-aware and have little baggage should be in high demand....so we should snap them up when they're young, before someone else gets them.

Well....maybe if you're born into check in baggage you have a problem. If it's only carry-on you should be ok. But seriously, I find most young children to seem pretty healthy and free of baggage, if they haven't been through some really bad emotional trauma. At some point though...it seems like things take a turn for the worse as they progress into adulthood. Ok...I have to resist getting serious here.
