Peg,
That photo of the models was from a magazine in the UK. I believe UK sizes are about one size different (i.e. UK 12 is US 10).

As for vanity sizing, I think it really depends where you buy your clothes. I wear everything from a 6-12. I would guess some of the 12's then are designed to older standards and the 6's are probably vanity sized. But, who knows. I have a great range of sizes in my closet ..smalls, larges, and lots of 8's and 10's.

I'm also 5'6''

I bet some men would consider me overweight, but I get plenty of dates so I must be 'okay' by most standards!
Thanks CP. I didn't know the source, but I suspected it might be UK sizing based on the visuals. I think my 6-8 for most clothing translates into 10-12 in UK sizing, which would be pretty consistent with my comment that I'm closer to the size 12 model than the size 8 depicted - or somewhere in between.

I've seen pictures of you, and I think it would be rare for a guy to consider you overweight. I think some guys might say you're bigger than what they're looking for (you know, the guys looking for the pencil thin women), but I suspect you actually come close to the men's ideal as shown in those pics.

Quote: What's missing from this comparison though is an indication of height. I can see a 5'10" or 6' tall model looking like the size 16, but at 5'4", the proportions wold be much different

(Sorry, I have posted regularly anywhere since TWoP was still MBTV, lol, so I can't remember the quotey-codes anymore.)

I'm 5' 10", and a size 16. (230 lbs) The size 16 model is actually fairly close to me, exept I have slightly larger "girls", and tend to have more belly. (I'm on meds that can add unbelievable amounts of water -- I can vary by several inches day-to-day.)

There was a great picture in Mode magazine (that now-long-gone plus-sized fashion mag from Lane Bryant) that was a two-page spread of like 20 models, all wearing identical size 14 black dresses. It was amazing how some of them totally looked like size 8's, and some looked like size 20's. It really is all in the way you carry it, I think.

Very hard to tell just from the numbers. Unless the numbers are grossly unbalanced, like 4' tall and 200lbs.

I'm 5'10", 143lbs. Usually wear a size 6 and rarely a 4. No one ever guesses I'm 140ish lbs. They always guess lower.

For me it's less about weight and more about physical activity. Does your weight interfere with your lifestyle? Are you out of breath just from walking down a long corridor? Does the thought of taking the stairs instead of the elevator blow your mind? Are you always searching for the absolutely, closest parking spot in the lot just to keep from having to walk a few extra yards, and you're willing to circle the lot for 10 minutes to get it?

BMI is probably the best 'number' as far as an indicator of 'overweightness.'

BMI is a completely arbitrary number that only applies to average people.

LOL! I'm trying to figure out when you would administer this 'test.' Do you have her try the pants on at the beginning of the first date? Zipper up, it's a go. No zip, no date?
