Ha! I get this daily - I had a very funny one this morning asking about an overdue invoice.

By the standards of US english, it would have been quite rude, but I'm sure the Chinese sender carefully wrote it, trying to be respectful. That dichotomy is what made it funny.

I am very willing to tolerate this kind of thing from people who are not native speakers of my language.
Ditto. Usually these are from people of Egyptian or Indian (India) origin.

What I find even more striking is that my last name, minus the s, is a man's name. So often, even though I answer my phone as Meri Surname; the caller will continue to address me for a few phone calls by my surname. At first this was very confusing for me until I twigged the caller was after me and addressing by my surname minus the s!

Ah, work, yes, that digs up a whole new handful of worms.

I work with the Japanese a lot. It's respectful to end their names with -san.

But you have to use their LAST names.

So, for me, it'd be Goode-san.

But if you get it wrong, and use their FIRST name -- e.g. Saul-san -- then it's rude.

It's the difference between Mr. Goode, and Mr. Saul.

Sometimes we'll ask each other which of their names is the family name. To make things worse, they put their family names first, but not always.

In Japan, I'm Goode Saul. So when they set up their emails, it's anybody's guess as to whether they used the Japanese or Western standard (family name first or second, resp.)

Did yall get all that?

- Goode-san
I know I'm in trouble when I get emails from colleagues (overseas) and the email is signed something like: Sun Chun Wang.

I have no idea how to respond correctly with the person's name and they never, ever personalise their signature either! I usually end up replying: Hi Sun Chun Wang ...

Yep ... I am guessing they are thinking I am giving my name last then first ... And also mistakenly adding an 's' to the end of my name ... So, many call me Andrew ... Boy was that confusing when my good friend, whose name is Andrew, worked right next to me .... Hahahaha, funny times.
