I won't respond to another adult, if they call me something I don't like.
Do you promise?

I work in an office where there are very few women. The other female manager and I are constantly getting called by the others' name. Since there's so few of us, you'd think they'd be able to keep us straight! We just laugh about it.

And for some reason, in work e-mails I will often get called the wrong name by customers. They pick another first name that starts with the same letter as mine, then shorten my last name (it's two syllables, they shorten it to just the first one). I have no idea why.

I usually don't correct them and let it slide. When they realize their mistake they're usually embarrassed and apologize... to which I respond "Don't worry, I've been called worse!" It makes them laugh... and really I don't care. If they do it often I might jokingly call them another's name. They'll laugh, but then they "get" it and tend to remember my name after that.

Our name becomes our identity.

It is one of the last things we lose, even with dementia. Not knowing your name is a serious sign something is wrong in your brain.

But it's the name you think of yourself as being. In other words, if your nick since you were a baby is "Billy", then "Billy" is one of the last things you lose as dementia progresses. If you were "William" through your adult life, you can lose that earlier than your family nick.

What's in a name?

All of who you are.
