Just talked to a guy off another site, through IM. He seems down to earth, and has a few dislikes/likes that I have.A good different from recent guys Though with my string of bad dates, it's coming off as " to good to be true". I'm not jumping to conclusions. I explained I'm shy, so he gave me his number, saying once we talk if I'm comfortable enough I can give him mine.

How much do you think you can tell from talking to someone through chat? i.e emails or IM's?

Very little.

You can get a fairly quick overview of what he might be looking for (e.g., does he say things like, "UR Hot! or bring up s*x?). I'd steer clear if so. But it will take many, many more conversations to really get to know him.
If you had a good feeling from the first conversation, give him a call and learn more about him...and good luck!

I'd just add one more 'very' to 'very little'. As in....Little to Nothing.....and Little just left town.

You can maybe gauge one sense of humor from these types of communication, but that's about it. Without seeing ones reactions or body language there is no point in trying to figure some one out over an IM

I disagree, somewhat. At a minimum, you can figure out what interests, experiences, etc. you have in common. It's a great way of evaluating their grasp of the english language, not that I advocate running spell check or anything. And, if a guy speaks only in acronyms and uses 8 million smiley faces and exclamation marks like a 12 year old girl, there's a pretty good chance we're not going to click in person. . . If he's decent at expressing himself in writing, you can definitely start to see his sense of humor, and even how open/forthcoming he is. Lot of stuff. Good luck!

Unless you knew this guy fairly well I think that a block at the "hey gorgeous" would have been a good move. Certainly at the first f_ _ _.

While you can't judge "chemistry" until you meet in person I think you can judge a great deal about a person's values no matter what medium you use to communicate.
