I was just curious. I am in my 40's and have kept my hair long, but it is always neat and healthy and not full of split ends, etc. I've been told that I should cut my hair and style it more for a woman in my age bracket and am curious about what men think about this. I usually keep it in a clip or up in a bun because it attracts too much attention and strangers come up to me and like to pet my hair like I am a dog or something. I am not kidding. Some people really need to learn to respect others personal boundaries. It is about two feet long so I'm not talking about below one's shoulders long but really long.

I guess one question I would have for you: Does longer hair make you look younger than if you had shorter hair? If shorter hair would make you look older then why would you want to look older? Is it because you want to attract older guys?

Having had this conversation with numerous guys from ages 30's into the 50's as a generalization MOST guys will say they like ladies with long hair versus short. Longer hair on women make them appear more feminine and less masculine. Longer hair tends to make a ladies face look thinner whereas shorter hair makes the face look wider.

Not a comment specifically on your situation, but I have seen a number of women in the workplace appear to “give up” on appearance care at a certain point. That, to my taste, is a mistake.

I have a thing for waist length straight black hair on women. I have never dated a girl with waist length straight black hair. Sad but true.

I think that a particular hair style on one woman may not be the best style for another. Can you imagine Dorothy Hamill with long hair? I can't either! You may wish to consult with a hair stylist for the style that would suit you best. I can say that if you wear your hair in a bun that you are not going to be getting any looks from me.

You know by now most men prefer long hair!

That's really creepy they invade your space like that. I can't even imagine what I would do! Shrink with repulsion? A blood-curdling primal scream?

If you let it go grey, I think both sexes would agree that's more attractive short.

I think the "page boy" look (is it called that, still?) can be great, as it can be beautiful, and afford its wearer to draw attention to a nice necklace, lovely bare arms and shoulders shown off in strapless dress or sundress, these days.


That would really catch most guys' attention and keep it, for sure.


Lush rich swingy hair that smells sweet, and clean, and moves a lot, to the shoulders is wonderful too, makes the guy wants to just bury his face in it and touch it.


Each is attractive and alluring in different ways. Which suits YOU?


Anything longer than that though, leads to a suspicion that you are TOO into your own hair for its own sake, and will be always constantly fussing and playing with it too much . Definately "NAFF"


Also, don't be like my last g/f, who went through about a CAN of hairspray a day,(and that is when she went EASY on the stuff!!) and absolutely HATED me to even *touch* that sticky helmet. She even said she hated ANYONE to EVER touch her hair, she did not like it.

We of course have no idea what you look like, but it sounds to me like your friends are gently trying to tell you that your current hairstyle is not flattering to you. Two feet is very, very long and can be aging, especially if one's hair has begun to gray. "Neat and healthy" is not necessarily the same as stylish or flattering, if those things are important to you.

Cutting one's hair when it's that long can be pretty emotionally traumatic, and take real courage, but when I've seen it done on makeover shows, it usually results in a much more flattering style and lots of Ohs! and Ahs! from the crowd (just below shoulder length hair will still give a long hair look without the heaviness of very long hair).

That being said, if you truly love your hair and want to keep it that long, then go for it! There are no doubt men who will really like it.

It depends on your entire look. It also depends on the cut itself. Unfortunately you have to get your hair cut off before you know.

But it will grow back.

Some women look amazing with short hair.

I would say that a round, plain haircut is likely to look just that. Round & plain. If the cut has a different style then it might work.

I think long hair looks so feminine and attractive. Seem's that many women after having kids or in the workplace go for short hair.

Even if it goes gray I think you should keep it long if its still healthy looking.
