Jaqui, I think you have it right on.

I've considered dating some black men and were there not so much family prejudice surrounding black people, I probably would. But because family comes with the package and it is so blatant, in order to keep family harmony I wouldn't. Some may say that true love should go before family but realistically speaking unless you are totally cut off or have no family, it does come with the package. I would not put a man I care about in this situation both for me and him. Friends' opinions, too bad... but family, that is different.

I once went out with a very dark Hispanic and the looks we received from elderly white people was withering and at first it was unsettling but then it became too bad, if you don't like it, don't look. Family accepted him so there were no issues there but even in the liberal area where I live I was genuinely surprised about the level of prejudice that swims just below the surface.

I prefer darker men. Period. I even told my mom that when I was dating, that should I have children they were going to have brown eyes and brown skin even though I am fair with blue eyes (genetics and so on). Cannot dissuade a preference and from me she did not get her cherished blonde haired blue eyed grandchildren, but she got them from a sibling.

I think, in a nutshell, it's when we think we're being excluded and that we're not going to get what we want (people wanting to date us). Some people may try to dress it up in terms of 'right' and 'wrong'...but I think basically it comes down to self-interest. We don't want to be denied what it is we want.
Yep, i'll stick my thumbs up to this.

Creoleprincess and Fengshui are not getting the difference between preferences and prejudices. Preferences leaves you with people/things you like to different degrees. I "prefer" chicken to fish. Prejudices is pre-judice; pre judgement before knowing. Extremely different. (S)he is prejudiced against (you name it; minority, body type, etc) indicates (s)he dislikes (whatever) for unfounded reasons. Change your prejudices to preferences and you raise your consciousness....
