The chances of him being a whack-job are the same as the chances of someone being a whack job that you meet in real life.

I'm unsure why the perception exists that OTHER online daters are whack jobs. If this is something that you actually fear, then maybe you should not do online dating.

Most of my first dates I met at a restaurant, where I sometimes waited inside, sometimes in my car. I’ve met a lot of the women without knowing what she looked like, and have had a fair amount of embarrassment asking the wrong person before the right one showed up. Wearing / carrying something unusual helps.

I feel that refusing to give your phone is risky. I would interpret that as you have trust issues and don’t feel adequately in command of your own life. While I don’t personally care to talk on the phone before meeting, it seems most people do. Also, if either of you are late you can’t reach each other.

If he has been consistent and forthright in his communication, and displays the same manners and patterns between his e-mail, phone, and profile, I would feel comfortable.
I've been willing to do the secure call option that eH offers. I used to give out my number until I started communicating with someone who I eventually chose not to see...he ended up calling and texting me constantly for a 3 month period even after I asked him to stop. Its not that I have trust issues, but in this day and age, I like being a little cautious.

This is a person on Yahoo personals. Active 24 hours such as myself. He didn't say he wanted to met me yet - he sent an ice breaker. But the way I am as soon as I saw it I started asking the questions to myself - what if. I know i'm kind of a freak that way. I'm new to online dating and was just wondering - cuz that's how I am - what if it does come down to meeting. Just wondering before I do something stupid.

You have no mobile phone? I was not aware it is possible to find a residence using a mobile phone number? (For that matter, a creepy creep could fallow someone home after the date anyway.)

In any case, having the friend along seems more than enough.

Ahh..thanks for explaining that...I will defer to other's who maybe know more about that...as I stated...my only online dating I am doing is EH...so have no idea how that process works on yahoo..and can only speak to what I feel comfortable with....but wish you luck

It is a cell phone - got rid of the land line 5 years ago. I was told it's possible to look up cell's also.

I understand that *67 will block display of your number.

I have met many people I have met online and have not had any problems.

You want to meet in a public place with lots of people around. A restaurant works well but generally a park does not.

OK what I thought I'd do is be in a public place - I find it so funny that I'd even second guess this when I meet someone in person - don't even think twice. I don't know this person Iam talking to anymore than a person sitting in front of me?! Just wondering because I have never done this before. I guess I have this thought that by meeting a guy on the internet that they have issues. But if I am doing this than how can I put someone else in a different standard?
