Channel surfing the other night and saw a segment on Oprah where women in the audience rated a picture of 3 guys on a 1-10 scale. Then they took the pictures with a "profile" of each guy and interviewed women. The profile listed among other things how much the guys made. Results? The least attractive guy based on looks alone had the highest income ($325,000 I think) and one woman gave him a 10!!! The most attractive guy based on looks alone had an "income" of $22,500 and was rated least attractive by women who saw his profile. Most women gave the guy a 4-5.

The expert on with Oprah said it had to do with a basic instinct women have as to the importance of finding a man who can provide for children they may have, etc.

If that's true, then should we assume that women who are past childbearing age or who don't want children don't consider a potential partner's income? A problem with these sorts of "studies" making assumptions that this is somehow ingrained is that they discount the very strong effects of culture on attitudes and preferences. (How does it explain the choices of women who choose men with little or no income?)

first of all, I'd like to have seen that with my own eyes.....second...how many women were on the panel? 3? 10? 100? What other attributes were listed?

If there is not much info, someone might make assumptions that someone who makes 22,000 never did anything with is life (he could be in school, an activist, etc) most people would assume anyone that lists their income as 22,000 is either working part-time or severely limited in his life choices, and that tends to not be attractive to MOST people that are adults and dating.

Personally, I dont list my income on dating sites and prefer when men don't list theirs either.

I believe that the only pieces of information were a picture with an income figure attached. So, no other information... It's not surprising that, in the absence of any other information, women would tend to choose the person with the higher income. Or, that physical appearance is not the most important factor for women when assessing a potential mate...

OK cp30 here is the linkhttp://www.oprah.com/article/oprahsh...le-sex-study/7

For me as a man, without knowing personality I rate attractiveness on looks. However, the more money a woman makes above a certain point the LESS attracted I am to her.

"...A problem with these sorts of "studies"....."
I like how you question the "studies".

Likewise, I often question these "experts" as well...Oprah's, eH's or anyone elses.

You are tooooo funny girl!!!!!

To the OP....I think that particular Oprah show showed thatclip pulledfrom the tv show on the Discovery Channel that I posted about the other day..The Science of Sex Appeal....(you can find that discussion on this Dating board...probablydown a page or so by now....

I didn't see the Oprah show....but did watch the one I mention andyes..there are sometimes basic traits that both men/women seek out without realizing it...obviously not everyone......the whole nature vs. nuture...and then adding in 'free will'...to the mix...so...while I find some things fascinating to learn....keep in mind we are all different and to not put everyone into the same mold...

22K is an aweful low amount to earn. I think the question I would like answered is how much money does Mr. Good Looking have to earn so his income-adjusted rating equals his physical-only rating?

22K penalizes a man's rating

325K elevates a man's rating

Where is the median point you think? 60K? 100K?
