Herpe's the new wedding ring....

Sorry to hear. Herpes is contagious. You can get cold sores from kissing without the outbreak. You can definately get it if she has a break in her skin, like from dry sex and then you go down on her.

I'm not sure how strand 1 can become strand 2 if it enters the genital, something's not right. You can get it through touch and kiss.If you are dating a girl with a weak immune system, run. You don't have to tell everyone. Only the ones you hope to be intimate with. If she is sickly to begin with do her a favor and get out of there.

Though you can't or don't know if you can get rid of the virus you can boost your immune system to preventfurther outbreaks. Here a secret to getting rid of cold sores...vegatables, carrot juice and wheat grass. Ummm...make sure your always around a restroom. Sorry TMI.

I can tell you your bodyis a host for unknow pathogens, bateria and viruses, I can guarantee everyone has something. Tis the human condition. Natures way of controlling the population.

But yes tell her, don't be ashamed and don't guilt her. A loving person is accepting of your illnesses.

I once asked a girl to marry me knowing full well she had herpes. We played it as safe as you could with this condition. Although I later broke up with her, herpes did not play a part in the breakup. That was over 30 years ago and I am still herpes free.

Hang in there girl. You will find that special guy that is very understanding and willing to take the risk for his soulmate. Good Luck

its one in four or one in five people have herpes.
its sad but true.
be honest its scary but that girl needs to be able to decide for herself if the risk is worth is also, think about taking some medication to help prevent the spreading of the virus. talk to your doctor.
i know couples who have been together 25 years and only one of them have the virus.
educate yourself people.

Oh, one more thing, you can't give someone the sore unless you actually have the sore on your mouth so if you kiss someone and you don't have the sore, you're not going to give them cold sores.
This is not true.

Sores on the mouth or the genital area could be HSV I or II, though usually I is mouth and II is genital area. Technically, though it is rare, you could get HSV II that presents in the genital area, from someone with cold sores on the mouth, if those are HSV II. You can also get HSV I on your genitals. Both can be spread without visible sores.

Unfortunately.

I think cold sores, since like 80% of the population over 12 years old has them, are not worth a mention, BUT!

I think you should get tested for all STDs so if you did want to bring it up, you could confidently tell her that you only have the cold sores that 80% of the population has and that you are totally healthy otherwise. She deserves that.

There is a disturbing amount of misinformation on this thread, but the above post is correct. Either form of Herpes can occur on either the genitals or mouth, can be passed via kissing, oral sex, or genital contact, and the majority of the population carries it whether they show symptoms or not.

Once upon a time it was assumed that one type was only oral and the other was only genital, but that hasn't been the case for a long time. We can probably thank an increased frequency of oral sex for that. (Not that I'm complaining. That's a small price to pay as a society. Ha.)

Up until several years ago, tests could not distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 as they both are very similar in structure in the lab. And even today, many doctors will tell you they cannot do a blood test for Herpes and tell you whether you have genital Herpes. HSV - 1 is the cold sore type - and that stats are anywhere from 90 -95 % of the population has this. I tested positive for Herpes - both HSV 1 and HSV 2 - but have never had a symptom of either. People use to think that if you had Herpes, you had to experience an outbreak. And - in the past, to diagnose it - you did - because if they tested you for Herpes (blood test), almost everyone would test positive because they could not distinguish HSV 1 from HSV 2. They had to wait until you had an outbreak in the genital area and then examine it. Most people assume because they have never had an outbreak in the genital area - that they do not have Genital Herpes - not true. You are what is called an asymptomatic carrier - test positive but no symptoms - and more and more people are finding this out about themselves. And you do not have to have an outbreak to pass it on to others - that is how I got it. The very sad thing for me is that I may have passed this on to others - and for that I feel guity. My advice - get yourself tested. There is no safe sex if you have Herpes - condoms and Valtrex reduce the virus shedding but they are NOT 100%. Google asymptomatic Herpes carriers - there was a big study released in April of 2011 - detailing how much asymptomatic carriers shed the virus (this is how it spreads). It is lower than the people with symptoms but it is still possible to catch Herpes from me. http://herpes-coldsores.com/asymptomatic_herpes.htm
