i think webcams are a great idea! talking on the phone and sending emails allow questions to be answered to a certain degree but webcams open up more of a physical aspect of the digital dating that isnt avaialble over phone/email/chat clients - it allows you to view facial expressions and body language; two very key things to pay attention to when meeting new people.

you can also make sure that picture they sent you wasnt ten years old

Yep, webcams are a great tool for LDRs and pre-first date online relationships. I haven't tried it, but only because I've never been in either of those situations.

exactly! it's quite reassuring to see the person's mannerisms, that they are who they say they are (they match their photos!), and you get a better taste of their personality... people represent themselves a certain way in an email but webcam is more "real" in a sense.

I think it could be a nice tool to have in the communication process but it won't replace a in person meeting. You do get to see the person as they are today and get some indication of manerisms and animation while speaking.

I have a problem with web cams in that they provide a choppy video and sometimes lock up my computer.

not always the case... if your experiencing these issues i would say that more than likely it's a combination of a few different things working against you... your computer performance, your network speed and the quality of camera.

if you have an older computer with little in the way of cpu speed or ram; it may not have enough in the way of available resources to process the cam at the same time which would be why you lock up. i minor fix to this would be going into you task manager and stopping most of the applications and processes that are running in the back ground, this will help free up some resources. you can send me a message and i'll be more than happy to give you instuctions if your unsure.

most everyone today is using some sort of highspeed whether its dsl or cable but if your on dial up or sharing a highspeed connection you could be facing bandwidth issues. dial simply won't provide the bandwidth to have a quality cam session. if your sharing a connection or you have a lot of downloads going on in the background, this will also degrade the bandwidth and leave with the same performance as a dial up. if your using a wireless connection, you may have signal issues that will also affect the performance.

and this goes without being said that the quality of the camera also plays a big role... you wouldnt expect the quality of photo's you see in national geographic to be the same as the ones you take with the camera on your cell phone would you? if both people in the session have a quality cam some where in the range of $50 - 100, you should have a pretty crisp image on both sides.

I'm just curious if anyone has tried using webcams with a match from eH (or another dating site) BEFORE meeting up in person for the first time? My feeling is that it has taken the nervousness out of actually meeting in person... Anyway! Just curious if anyone has tried this and what they thought about it...

oh... as cost is generally a factor for most everyone these days i would suggest you not visit your local department store for items like this. my general practice is to visit the store so i can get a "hands-on" view of the product, get the items spec (vendor/model #) and plug that information into google. i've built my last 3 computers buying parts off this site www.pricewatch.com it's a mirror site that will allow you to view the item and cost from a variety of other online retailers - normally saving you roughly 30 - 60% of best buy's ticket price.

I've done the webcam thing with one guy from a different dating site and I'm glad I did because it did make meeting a little less awkward. But, as Gr8guy said, there are still elements that are different in person. This person and I really clicked when talking via webcam - talked a total of 6 hours in 3 days time - but when we met in person it just wasn't the same for me. He was far more pushy in person and the date was a bit awkward. Would never have predicted that from the time spent on webcam. But again, I think if you have the opportunity to use it, it's just one more help in getting a better idea of how you'll interact in real life.

Yes.... such a good idea.. I've started using it before I meet anyone.. its a great way to figure out whether you're gonna have any chemistry at all aside from msn. and phone calls.. AND you def find out if you are talking to the person you see in all the pics.. .

Webcam's are great. It does allow you to see a person you are talking to. I don't see why more people don't use them.

Gr8Guyn2008 - If it is within your budget, you can check out laptop computers on Dell's website. You can get a pretty decent computer for a pretty decent price, and you have a built in mic and webcam. I'm using a Dell laptop I got just a few months ago right now.
